We were in Japan from 78 to 82. We got to visit Korea, Taiwan, and the Phillipines while we were there. Although I'm not sure the weeks I spent in the base hospital with kidney failure count as much of a vacation. I'm drawing a blank on the base name, the one the US evacuated because of the ashfall and then never went back.
What did you think of Italy? We have a son who has a possibility of being stationed there next fall. We hope he does. We never made it to Europe. We were trying for England, and spent months finding a school that would accept our daughter with autism plus, and on the day we found one, we received orders to go to Alaska. I loved Alaska, so that turned out ok.

I would truly dislike living in Oklahoma. How is it for you?

We were in the Far East at the same time. I was there from 1973-1975 and 1976-1981. The two major bases in the PI was Subic Bay NS and Clark AB which closed in 1991 as a result of the volcano. I visited the former Clark AB in February and I was surprised that is was still mostly intact. The Philippine government did a great job preserving it and Subic Bay and making them into a resort-retirement community-industrial-international airport facility. I only spent a couple weeks in Italy in 1996 and loved the food. Then I retired from the military.

Can't complain about Oklahoma, weather is usually good except for the tornados that pop up mostly in the spring but can happen year round. If you look at a map you can see that Oklahoma is an Interstate highway crossroads.

There are still four bedroom homes being built in my subdivision for less than $200,000 and at least four new strip malls under construction near me. Gas is $1.36 per gallon and did not rise much above $3.00 in the recent past because there are oil wells that are pumped when fuel prices are high. Good jobs are still plentiful.

The county purchased a closed General Motors factory that was next door to Tinker AFB and rented it to the Air Force for one dollar a year so they can close substandard buildings and shops built during World War Two. There is new construction all over Tinker as it picks up new missions from closed military bases including a full Navy Wing.

There is a new skyscraper being built downtown. After the Murrah building was bombed, which shook my house to its foundations, the city fathers started an aggressive redevelopment program that has successfully returned businesses and middle class to luxury housing downtown. Whole neighborhoods are being rescued from blight and crime and returned to families.

Ain’t no recession here; Oklahoma is OK.
