This is a fun topic!

My obsessions are:

* American West history (migrations): more accurately, the Chisholm Trail, Bonnie and Clyde, the Dust Bowl migrants, Native American removal in the Southern Plains
* Human geography (movement of people): more accurately, vernacular cultures, city development, categorizing regions
* maps - I study them for hours and hours, and I collect them (I've got some old ones)
* Holland's RIASEC typology: categorizing people with certain intrests and traits
* Route 66, Diners, Old Motels, Neon Signage - I go on a lot of road trips
* Collecting photos of calabooses (one-room jails)

My husband doesn't understand these interests, as his passions are tangible - electronics, vintage video games.

My child, who has AS and is the one who got me to come to terms with my own AS, started his obsessions with water towers when he was 2. He then collected street reflectors, and he could even name the street he got each reflector from (we have over 100 of them). He collects American coins. Right now, he's interested in Hot Wheels cars, which is an "acceptable" interest, I suppose. He gets in trouble at school for picking up bottle caps, and he brings all sorts of "debris" into school to show his teacher.

My son is 8 and is the most fascinating person I know.

*shocking realization*

I've only recently found out I have AS, and after reading this post I've just realized that I've been obsessed with collecting junk throughout my childhood. I was fascinated by metallic objects and anything that looked slightly technological or useful. I tried to take everything from bottle caps to car engines, in hopes of building some neat gadget out of them later.

Hahaha... I cannot believe this...

My obbsessions are mostly videogame related. I like holding onto old PC games that I don't play anymore. I keep them in safe spots so I can take a look at them, and have quick access should I desire a replay. I also collect files on my hard drive. Alot of wierd pictures, text files. Archived files and the like that i've already used, but kepted in other incarnations as a "just in case" measure.

I also used to collect national geographic maps, but my collection is long missing.

Yea, I'm crazy, I know.

I still have a leaf from a biology experiment in school four or five years ago. It's in a shoebox on top of my cupboard.

I'm a bit of a game and file packrat, too. I've got a huge collection of PC games. I also have close to a terrabyte of hard drive space among my PCs, mostly full.

Can't afford that kind of space... so I have to budget what gets kept and what doesn't.

My desktop PC has an 80GB IDE drive and two 200GB SATA drives. Then there's 80GB more in my laptop, and a 10GB and a 200GB in my homemade DVR. :D

Bah... don't feel bad.

The worst part for me is that I barely play any games any more, and less than 10GB of the space I have is devoted to them right now.

Oh, another big drive I forgot about - I have a 200GB in my Xbox, filled to the brim with Xbox games. It's modded so I can run my games without ever putting the disc in.

Obssessions are like books on a shelf, or collections in jars. They stay up there, and all is fine with the world. But if I take one down, I'll spend hours reading about the SR-71 Blackbird, researching more material, even attempting to compile a list of sources for pictures and articles.
They never sit on the shelf for very long either, try as I might to resist the little devils, I have to take one down every once in awhile and get possessed ...

that's a very good image prof, exactly what i meant
