Huh? Weird. I know a girl who plays the viola and she plays it like violin players play the violin. My brother plays the violin.

Yes, that's why I said "often played like a cello". In french we call it a "viole de gambe", which means "leg viola", and which is the most popular . Anyway it's closer from a guitar or a luth than from a violin, because of the strings number and the frets (you know, the small bars which bounds the notes).
