No, there isn't. Most of my family is estranged from him. I am the only one who bothers to call him and chat with him. And by association, my family won't deal with me. So if something has happened, I don't know how I can find out. When we were kids, my parents separated, and our mother turned us against him. It wasn't until the last few years that I realized how big a lie I had been living. Most of the things she said about him weren't even true, and I found out some truly horrific stuff about her, through counseling. Now, I wish I hadn't ignored him all those years. I found that he truly loved his children, and my mother, out of spite, cut us off from him.

If you're getting very worried, you can always get the police to check up on him.

It would be a "last resort", but if you are getting so concerned, and you cannot get to him yourself, something has to be done.

Oh, that's too bad, Hartz. :( Iis it possible for you to get in touch with the authorities where he lives? They will usually check up on seniors if there is a concern.

Can you call the local cop shop there and ask for a "welfare check"? Most cops will actually send someone by to check these cases out.

Nan!
I LOVE Eleanor Abernathy! (Nannie's new Avatar)

Eleanor Abernathy, known as the Crazy Cat Lady and voiced by Tress MacNeille, is a woman with the appearance and behavior of a stereotypical mentally ill person. She is an animal hoarder and is always surrounded by a large number of cats. In nearly every appearance she screams gibberish or throws live cats at passers-by. Kent Brockman revealed the Crazy Cat Lady’s true name, Eleanor Abernathy, during an interview in the episode “See Homer Run.”

She first appeared in the ninth-season episode "Girly Edition," in which she pelted Lisa with cats during Lisa's news segment at Kidz Newz. In the episode "I, (Annoyed Grunt)-Bot," the Simpsons' family cat Snowball II dies and after adopting two more short-lived cats, the Crazy Cat Lady appears and gives Lisa a cat that looks exactly like Snowball II. In the episode "Homer and Ned's Hail Mary Pass", the Cat Lady enjoys "brief moments of lucidity" after taking psychoactive medication. She abruptly resumes her usual bizarre behavior when Marge mentions that the "pills" are actually Reese’s Pieces.

Even without medication, she appears to be very intelligent. In an episode in which Mayor "Diamond" Joe Quimby is recalled, she runs for the mayor's office. During a candidate debate, she is asked what public-policy issues are important to her; unlike the other candidates (who act as stereotypical dishonest politicians), Abernathy discusses issues such as health care, economy, and public education in between her screams and gibberish (and a call for cats "in everyone's pants"). In "Springfield Up," it is revealed that Eleanor earned an MD from Harvard Medical School and a JD from Yale Law School- both by age 24. In one scene, Eleanor is representing a client in open court and asks to be excused to deliver a baby. However, eight years later, she exhibits signs of alcoholism due to stress, and she has become very attached to her pet cat; she suggests that she might get another one. After an additional eight years, she has assumed her present appearance and behavior

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess I will have to call the authorities, just to find out.

They were from the last one, the Cedar in 2003, Merle. But they might as well have been from the one two weeks ago. I thought they were striking enough to share - especially the one where all the traffic is going the wrong way on a freeway. We actually saw that from an overpass, though I didn't take the photo. It was pretty amazing, something one sees once (I hope) in a lifetime only. The air quality was the same, though, as the photo of the aircraft. And the hills afterward - that's an ecological preserve.

The big fires are still burning, actually. They've finally got them almost contained (as in, not spreading). We were all a bit nervous over the weekend - they'd predicted the Santa Annas would come back again. The Governator even put all those that could be put on high-alert/active duty on. But it didn't happen. It's misting a bit this morning, and grey. As in clouds, not ash. Which is good. It cleans th air. The mist will also help the plants regrow, hopefully before any real rain comes. If the rain comes before the plants grow, the hillsides will turn to mudslides.

My laundry, the three quadruple-loaders that I did that Sunday morning and all the bed linens we did - when I take the clothes out of the drawers to put on in the morning, they smell like smoke. My pillows and my comforter smell like smoke.

Which is better than smelling like a cat's stinky backside, but my sinuses still hurt.

I really have to get us out of this place.

Hey, Nan. Was there any fall-out from you inadvertently outing yourself the other day? I believe you said you shot yourself in the foot.

Hmm, I squirted a little bactine on it, put a "Power Ranger" bandaid on it, and so far it hasn't gotten infected.

Ok, actually, I've been assigned to "shadow" a "disabled" student for two hours and then present my findings at a panel discussion this Thursday evening as a way for the "non-disabled" in the audience to understand what it's like for a disabled person like my shadowee to deal with life on a daily basis.

Rather ironic, don't you think?

Sigh. A public panel presentation.

That will probably be taped. OMFG. 8O

Ah, have faith, Nan. If any of us can do it, it's you. What "findings" are you looking for? :?
