I'll leave you with a bedtime story: CA-MRSA has begun replicating inside soil-residing Acanthamoebas (growing from one cell into a thousand inside the amoeba), the Acanthamoebas then form cysts containing CA-MRSA, the cysts then catch air currents and go airborn.... ....and can travel great distances with long-living virulent CA-MRSA. So some strains of CA-MRSA are now airborn as well....

The good news: Most people are exposed to various forms of Staphlococcus areus all the time with no ill effect (an estimated 2 billion people worldwide carry some form of S. aureus. Of these, an estimated 53 million carry some form of MRSA. In the U.S. 95 million people carry some form of S. aureus in their noses; of these, 2.5 million carry some form of MRSA. The bad news: of those, 94,000 develop serious infections, and of those, 19,000 die per year (more than those who die from AIDS). MRSA was discovered in the UK in 1961 - approximately 3,000 people in the UK die of MRSA yearly. (Most at risk: The very young; the elderly; crowds (schools, prisons, military camps, etc.); athletes in 'body contact-type' sports locker rooms; those hospitalized with serious illness, burns, or surgeries; the immunocompromised; those with cystic fibrosis; and those with psoriasis, cuts, or dermatitis on their hands).

HA-MRSA (hospital acquired) is a whole other story - REEEEALLY nasty stuff - (with Panton-Valentine leukocidin beta-pore forming toxins, and enterotoxins) - some deadly in 72 hours. But that's another story.

Well, I found out about my father. He is in the hospital, being treated for a second stroke. I did call the police in his city, and they actually called me back and told me that they had gone out to his place, and spoken to him and that he was fine! I couldn't understand why, if he was fine, he wasn't answering the phone or returning calls. The next day, I received a call from a friend of his, who gave me the number of the Rehab Hospital he has been in for a week. Being my father, he is refusing all treatment and demanding to go home. I could barely understand what he was saying, his speech was so badly slurred. I pleaded with him cooperate with the doctors and therapists, but knowing him, I don't feel much hope that he will comply. He has never trusted doctors or hospitals very much, and he is very stubborn about returning home. He even hung up on me. I have been up all night, crying. There is not anything that I can do.

No, hon, there isn't a damned thing you can do. If you were able to prove he was a danger to himself or others and of unsound mind, yes. But if he's coherent enough, there's nothing. I'm so sorry you have to go through this. :(

No, there isn't. Between him and my daughter, I am being driven to despair. Thank you, Laurie and Nan, for your kind words. I keep thinking of him going home and trying to drive. I spoke to his doctor, and they are ordering a psych eval. If my father keeps saying that they are conspiring to keep him there, I'm not sure how they will take it. It broke my heart to here how difficult it is for him to speak. He was saying that he has to pay his rent. If I lived closer, I could help him. But l don't. He does have a lady friend, but I don't know how much she can do.

Is he affiliated with any religious group? Perhaps contact them and they can offer assistance of some sort. (checking him on him routinely...I don't know) Catholic social services helps lots of people here in many varied ways regardless of ones religious affiliation. I'm agnostic and they offered me support when my daughter was murdered. It can't hurt to check into it at the very least. (I'd wrote you a longer post but the "server went down?" and it was lost.) Don't fall into despair yet.

I've asked the people at the hospital to have his lady friend call me, so that I can ask about things. That's a good suggestion, reika. I don't know what church, if any, he belongs to. I feel frustrated that my own physical limitations prevent me from at least going for a visit.

I will be surprised if the friend does call me, because from the few times I met her in the past, she gave the impression that she didn't like me. Sort of a jealousy thing, I guess. So foolish.

It is so hard when an elderly relative is in dire need of help, yet digs their heels in and refuses to let anyone help. And it's even more complicated when legal issues come into it (next of kin, power of attorney, and so forth). And it ends up being the person who cares the most, or who has the strongest sense of obligation, that carries the load.

Money doesn't answer every question, but this is where I think, "If only hartz could have a huge win in the lottery, wouldn't that be good!"

Thinking of you.

That is outlawed under the Geneva convention, or the human rights convention or something like that. Look under the section about limits to permissible embarrassment of close relatives, and check the cross reference to justifiable homicide.

There are established protocols as to the amount and type of embarrassing material each child shall have in his or her personal portfolio: the photo of him or her as a baby completely covered with mashed peas, chocolate, spaghetti bolognaise or similar foodstuff; the letter written to first crush but never sent; and other items of this nature. The occasions upon which this material may be revealed in public are well-defined (18ths or 21sts; during the formal presentation at the wedding reception, etc.) and may, indeed, include the first visit to the parental home of the prospective boy/girlfriend. In this case, I would defer the introduction of the naked baby photos until perhaps the third or fourth such visit, unless of course the intention is to curtail dating activity altogether.

After meeting the GF, I didn't have the heart. Not to mention the fact that he introduced me as "one of the coolest moms on the planet and if you ever have a problem and no one to help, my mom will." His portfolio will be packed away for a long while.
She is a very nice girl, not foolish or giddy, has a job waitressing and a lousy home life. She is coming here again this afternoon. She convinced all 3 boys to play a board game and there was no squabbling! 8O I'll keep her around even if he doesn't.

I've known it to happen where the romance between the two young ones flared and died away, but the bonds of friendship with the BF/GF's family persisted and strengthened over many years. Xan has brought home several of what his Dad affectionately calls "long-haired mates", and they've all been likeable, genuine girls. Not a "plastic" in the lot! I feel lucky.

Your son's friend sounds like a good sort to have around. Hope it goes well for all involved!

I think we are both blessed with the children we have. Kid #2 quit hanging around with the last one when she asked him to try Ecstasy. 8O That almost made me want to move out to the country and homeschool the lot of them.

Thanks, Nan! That's 2 more that I had forgotten about. I have compilations of late 60's and 70's music that I listen to constantly.
