I can't remember if she called herself Bubba or if Chuck called her that but it was a standing joke a few months back. I figured since all I have left of the N key on my laptop is a little tiny piece of rubber that I have to ohsocarefully press down on, I would just call her Bubba. Bubba is also the name given to represent a large, beer-drinking slob type redneck from the southern US.

Bubba was also a nickname for former president Bill Clinton. On an even lighter note I'm wondering which will happen first:
this thread reaching 600 pages or me reaching 3000 posts... :P

Nan has had not one, but two nicknames appropriated by the Aussies. Nan=Grandma and Bubba=Baby.

I enjoyed the Sigur Ros, Mescalero. "The oldies are revolting! Woo HOO!"

    F
  • fairy tale, n.: A horror story to prepare children for the newspapers.
  • feature, n: A surprising property of a program. Occasionaly documented. To call a property a feature sometimes means the author did not consider that case, and the program makes an unexpected, though not necessarily wrong response. See BUG. "That's not a bug, it's a feature!" A bug can be changed to a feature by documenting it.
  • Ferguson's precept: A crisis is when you can't say "let's forget the whole thing."
  • fidelity, n.: A virtue peculiar to those who are about to be betrayed.
  • Fifth law of applied terror: If you are given an open-book exam, you will forget your book. Corollary: If you are given a take-home exam, you will forget where you live.
  • Fifth law of procrastination: Procrastination avoids boredom; one never has the feeling that there is nothing important to do.
  • filing cabinet: A four drawer, manually activated trash compactor.
  • Finagle's creed: Science is true. Don't be misled by facts.
  • Finagle's eighth law: If an experiment works, something has gone wrong.
  • Finagle's first law: If an experiment works, something has gone wrong.
  • Finster's law: A closed mouth gathers no feet.
  • First law of bicycling: No matter which way you ride, it's uphill and against the wind.
  • First law of debate: Never argue with a fool. People might not know the difference.
  • First law of socio-genetics: Celibacy is not hereditary.
  • First rule of history: History doesn't repeat itself -- historians merely repeat each other.
  • Flon's law: There is not now, and never will be, a language in which it is the least bit difficult to write bad programs.
  • Flugg's law: When you need to knock on wood is when you realize that the world is composed of vinyl, naugahyde and aluminum.
  • fog lamps, n.: Excessively (often obnoxiously) bright lamps mounted on the fronts of automobiles; used on dry, clear nights to indicate that the driver's brain is in a fog. See also "Idiot Lights".
  • foolproof operation: No provision for adjustment.
  • forgetfulness, n.: A gift of God bestowed upon debtors in compensation for their destitution of conscience.
  • friends, n.: People who borrow your books and set wet glasses on them. People who know you well, but like you anyway.
  • Fuch's warning: If you actually look like your passport photo, you aren't well enough to travel.
  • Fudd's first law of opposition: Push something hard enough and it will fall over.

Thanks for your insightful and caring words, Merle! I have actually cried myself sick. An acquaintance said that this would be a good time for the Serenity Prayer. I have to agree with her, although my usual reaction to being told to pray, has been irritation. I'm going to bed, I think. Thanks, to everyone in the Cafe!

Oh, sweetie, I am soooo glad you went in for the prayer. I find it so irritating to have someone remind me of what I stand in need of,, because I feel like I should have thought of it myself.

....By the way Chuck that bug you describe... Where is this outbreak occurring?

We are seeing more cases in Davidson, Rutherford, and Sumner counties lately (Nashville, and vicinity):
http://www.wkrn.com/nashville/news/dead ... 124182.htm
http://www.newschannel5.com/Global/story.asp?S=7290808
http://www.wkrn.com/nashville/news/sumn ... 126450.htm

They have begun decontaminating several affected area schools, but the news reports here are minimally reporting what is actually being seen in the hospitals and pharmacies. I treated (or sent to hospitals), then afterwards gave meds and counseling to roughly 10 patients per night shift last week. We have decided to construct a small nursing clinic (2 exam rooms) in our pharmacy, so in addition to continually cleaning up the construction dust, we've been decontaminating the pharmacy nightly (plus counters, door knobs, phone handsets, etc, after each known infected patient) - at least 100 staph-contaminated patients have been in and out of our pharmacy last week. Several are traveling business people - who have been flying - and who intend to continue to fly - in spite of my advice to not expose other air travelers to their infections.

These people just do not have a clue as to how serious this could become. Two years ago the Netherlands had to decontaminate almost everything and quarantine all infected citizens before they got their problem under control - at great expense. If you plan to travel for the upcoming holidays, wash your hands before eating, or carry alcohol wipes.

I'll be back to play tomorrow - had to catch up on raking, mowing, laundry, and cleaning today, and my heating/cooling unit's coil is leaking, so I've got to get that fixed/ replaced. I'm so sleepy - can't keep my eyes open.

Postie - hang in there my friend. Best wishes to all!

Chuck

I think this may have found its way into Pennsylvania by now. I'm seeing new hand washing signs being posted everywhere,
at work, at McD's and few other places.

Yeah it did. They had a case in a scholl with in the distract here in the northern part.

About Haaartz being invited to pray:

For a while Jim was the minester in the Uniting Church in remote Mt Isa (in the Outback!) One woman would kneel at the front of the church and kneel when that was not the ritual of our church. She would also pray over the ill or injured.

I decided that if I were on my death bed and she prayed over me, I would die on purpose. I wasn't going to let her get the glory of my recovery.

This is part of my "Look at me being good" series in which I take a cynical view of the few who delight in the spotlight of doing great works.

Ha!

Woke up last night at 2:00am - noticed a lot of noise going on. Figured it must be the heating unit I "repaired". Went into the attic and shut it off. The noise continued. I went downstairs to find that the washing machine's hot water hose had burst. Shut that off. The noise continued. Wandered into the downstairs bathroom to discover that the toilet tank's water regulator top on the fill valve had broken and was spewing water as well. (Thank goodness I was home!) Have spent the rest of the morning removing water from the laundry room, hallway, kitchen, bathroom, living room, and downstairs bedroom. Have fans set up everywhere. Once the walls, carpet and floors dry out, looks like I'll be re-painting.

(water coming out of the electrical outlets is probably not a good thing, eh?  ).
