My acquaintance visited a family whose diet consisted mostly of fish and chips, or meat and chips (French fries for most Americans, Freedom fries for some). Vegetables were considered alien. Their normal way of getting rid of leftovers and cleaning the ketchup and mayonnaise off the plates was to put the plates on the floor and let their dogs lick off whatever was left.
No, the kids were not taken into care.

I heard the word "gurning" on the radio, so I had to look it up.

That must have been a winner. I look forward to the time when I can at least begin to compete. Need to work in a few more wrinkles, distress the face a bit. Where did I put that tanning funnel? Until I can start sun-drying my face, I guess I could practice jaw dislocation.
I would then be qualified for a job useful to society. I would visit families whose children have a poor diet and tell them "I didn't eat my vegetables when I was your age, and look what happened to me!" Of course, if you say that to boys of a certain age and disposition, the response will be "Oh, cool!"

oh, they have taken Freedom Fries off the menu at the Senate dining room. With Sarkozy's visit The States are all good friends with France again.

Oh, my best one involves cat hair on the counters and in the food (and cats walking over the open bowls of food), ants, mealworms and 3 small children (5,3, and 1 1/2) whose mother would cook up macaroni and weiners, put it in bowls and leave that and a box of cereal (where the meal worms were living) on the table. The ants were in the juice and macaroni. She would then start binge drinking. This came to light when the kids started letting themselves into my house and going into my fridge. We were in a low income townhouse complex. I finally took them in one day, fed them, bathed them and when I took them home I discovered what she had been doing. I gave her a warning when she was sober. A few nights later she showed up at my door at 11PM wondering where her kids were. I found them at the park a block away.
She did lose her children. I made darn sure she did. I also made it quite clear to all of the other "parents" that I was keeping a close eye on all of the little people in the complex.

I'm going to have to subscribe to Echoes I guess. We have no radio stations that play anything other than rock, country and classical.

Hi Lelia.
Yes, they are, more or less. Unfortunately, two days after they got the cats back to the shelter four of them died. Three were elderly, and two of those had either cat aids or cat leukemia. One was 'OTG" (older than god, as the shelter shelter staff put it). The remaining cat, well, we assume it was just all too much for the poor thing as it was relatively young and, as far as we know, healthy. It just kind of dropped and died.
I have to say, the manager and the vet tech out there should get some kind of award for staying there 24 hours a day in case the worst case scenario came, and the cats would have to be evacuated. And it did, and they were. Thankfully there was still a place to take them back to, though! The fire burned to just over 3 miles away from the shelter. It was much closer in the Cedar fire, but we had no casualties from that evacuation, so one never can tell how things will turn out.
Thankfully, also, it's over.
And I hope we don't live here in October of fours years from now, as we've got an "every four years" trend going.
