Blessedmom, I was reading a feature about the Tar Sands this morning titled "Black Gold, Black Heart." This was the lead paragraph:

More scene-setting: mud-encrusted pickup trucks with snowmobiles on the back. Guys suckin' down the brewskies in a dark, dingy boozer. And once again I was 18 years old in Redneck, Alberta.

The article was unsparing about the environmental and social consequences of having one of the world's richest oil sources open for business in your backyard. There's "cha-ching!" in it, but at a price. Relatives of mine who work up there can vouch for the dislocation from family and friends that comes with the territory.

I dunno what's up, but something sure is. We saw an Arctic Butterfly in the back yard, got a picture of it too. I saw it on the wife's screen for her computer and asked where on the net she got it from and what was it. She didn't know what it was and she took the picture in the backyard. It was very very extreme for it's range and I have never seen one here in 50 years or so.

It's a grater. You put a chunk of cheese or a hardboiled egg into the receptacle, press it down onto the cylindrical grater, crank the handle on the grater, and out comes shredded whatever.

Yes, I think Global Warming and climate change has gotton much worse. Noticeably worse. It was 37 degrees out and the snow was allready melting. It's the middle of NOVEMBER in ALASKA and the snow is MELTING, there are no chinooks blowing right now, so can't even blame it on them.

Reika, I wasn't thinking far enough north! And yes, when Alaska is melting in November, something is definitely skew-whiff.

Hi, Hartz! I was thinking about you today. When I was done baking and cleaning (the Xmas tree will have to wait) I was knitting up a storm. Such pretty colors.
I just can't think of a better way to spend an evening!

There are no chinooks blowing there because all of their wrath is centered on Southern Alberta! We have a wind warning in effect, gusts of 100 km and beyond. That beyond always scares me a little.
We usually have a good snowfall by Halloween every year but so far this year it's just been the occasional little dusting that melts as it hits the ground. We haven't had a white Christmas in about 5 years.

Further down the Pacific Coast, in Oregon, when I first came to the Rain Forest of the Applegate Valley it rarely got up to 90degrees F in the summertime, and snow in the mountians in Winter and rain in the valleys in winter, spring summer and especially in the fall. There were ferns and moss and such.
Now it is up to weeks above 100degrees F in the summer with spikes up to 110 and 113 F. The 'rain forest' atmosphere is gone, the hills are brown and baked and the leaves dusty and brown, the forest floor has become savannah like with dwarf and scrub oaks taking over from the forest. Fires from 'dry lightening' storms where rain falls but gets immediately absorbed into the dry air (virga) and hill sides popping up with scattered fires like popcorn popping.

I am moving further north as I grow older, Portland, maybe up to retire on Vancouver Island up around Duncan. It still rains there.

I love the comment the Fire Marshall made when interviewed about the fires down our Nan's way a couple of weeks ago. The reporter ( from New York) said "Do you feel this might be some symptom of Global Warming?" and the Fire Marshall said "In the West we don't debate Global Warming, we live in it."

Yes Reika, I sprouted on the fair banks of the Chena. Winter was -20-70 F out on the homestead, summer up to 104 one day(Passed out in the heat). . . wonder how it is now?

Sleepy Dragon, I checked it out: Medical Marijuana, Cryptosporidia for all and Alberta's first Mosque. Verry interesting places. Maybe we could take over some place like these and make an aspie town.

There must be a dozen posts (can't count too high) and I have only a single notice of posts in this forum. Is there alot of technical disruption? I gave up yesterday because every post took me to a video to watch while I waited my turn to post.

Wow the acoustic version, I really like it. Kinda "Bluesy" nice. Saw them in Nuremberg Germany, huge fight in the frount with siome guy in our company, Kevin Croner? stopped in the middle of the song and yelled "Cut that s**t out NOW" sorry that just flipped thru the rolodex of my mind when I think of REO Speedwagon. The wind rarely keeps me awake since I moved to this little bungalow, but tonight it is actually shaking the place. I wonder how may shingles I'll be missing in the morning? The spruce cones from those lovely 40 ft. trees are banging on the roof so I guess I'll be up there cleaning them off when the wind stops. I used to have a spruce growing in the front flower bed. It was leaning against the eavestrough and would squeak like crazy. I finally had it cut down and sent the bill to my landlord. Of course, I apologized to the tree first.

It's going to be a LLOONNGG night!!
