Ya that's what everyone tells me, "enjoy it while you can" wish someone had told me that before I put myself through the constant injuries and hospital visits that accompany skate/snowboarding. I feel like an old man sometimes

take care of yourself, you run the real risk of osteoarthritis [from accelerated wear and tear]. that is no fun at all. i have it in most of my body joints just from my 4 years in the army plus unfavorable genes.

Damn, I'm sorry for you. I have had to tone it down since around 20, broke both ankles within 2 years, definately made me realize how fragile we all are. Osteoarthritis would be the end for me.b

Sure it's always a good idea to look after yourself but that doesn't mean you have to hide away from the things you love - plenty of time for that when you're in the grave. Also, osteoarthritis doesn't have to be the end of you, as long as you're sensible with it.

I'd be the first to admit that I wasn't all that sensible with it for a fair while (working too hard and playing too hard in all the wrong ways) and I ended up unable to walk without the aid of crutches - it took two operations on my knees before I could start to walk again. As well as that, for most of last year and the first part of this year, I wasn't able to use my right arm and I still have trouble with my fingers sometimes.

The good news is that I've learned to deal with it and take the necessary measures to allow me to do the things I like - so much so that I'm now back to a good level of strength and fitness. I do a bit of weight training every day and try to keep the muscles around the joints as strong as possible to take the pressure off the joints themselves.

Tomorrow (and every Thursday from now on) I'll be spending the day out in the weather teaching kayaking - possible only because I eat a lot of fish (as well as taking regular amounts of marine glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM) and kit myself out with a good quality wetsuit and neoprene gloves.

I think that, as with so many other things we have to deal with, it's all a matter of finding the right sort of "work-arounds" to suit you and the things you like to do. Good luck and never stop doing the things that keep you alive in your spirit and young in your heart.

... and, since it's a photo thread, here's a photo my son took of me about an hour ago.

I already put up a couple of pictures of my ugly mug HERE, but I didn't want to go polluting the thread with them again unduly. :D

Keef, you do realise that the mask has another meaning as well? Its pretty much the sign/icon that hackers use when they hack a site as a deface. I think its much more associated with hackers then with V for Vendetta. (Also hacker organisation known as Anonymous uses it and i think i know why lol)

I do indeed realise this. I was trying on my new mask for a demo this coming weekend - you just can't beat a good old dose of civil disobedience when you need to get a point across to some overstuffed bureaucrat or a wunch of snout-in-the-trough bankers in the city. Fear not though - despite my proclivities in this respect, I'm far more into the political activism side of things than hacking... unless someone really pisses me off, that is.

Why thank you kindly - it's amazing how one can create a favourable impression with the help of several kilos of moisturiser every morning.

This was the best picture of myself that I could find. I'm in the front in the faux leather jacket that my mom made.
