The Dino-Aspie Ex-Café (for Those 40+... or feeling creaky)
Walked outside to warm up the car to take my daughter to school and was met by the sound of dripping water. All the snow is MELTING, in November...in ALASKA. Its so warm I did't even wear a jacket. The local stations say its 43 degrees. Just really weird. I would be loving it except for the climate change implications it raises.
Intresting site Krex, LOTS of stuff, will have to go back. What are you going to sell if you don't mind my asking. Blessedmom, you should maybe sell some stuff you've knitted there.
The wind stopped and now we have a snowy ground cover. It's -9C today. I believe winter is finally here.

I'm likin' this song today. Can't get it out of my head. It beats the sappy love songs that I usually have stuck up there.

Reika...I also am worried that the global warming may inpact us much sooner then the scientist have suggested.The unfortunate reality of humans is they appear to have short attention spans and a gift for adjusting to change(except us).Because of all the "environment scares" of the 70's,warning people of the some of the same issues we face today related to to much gaarbage,to many people,deforestation,pollution...some changes were made but people have forgotten that there was a time when we could actually drink out of a stream or eat fish without worrying about toxic metal poisens...we got used to it.
Short of growing gills,I dont think we are going to get used to the flooding of coasts when the ice caps melt or the drought that will follow global warming...."water,water,every where and not a drop to drink"<---who said that?Even if their was a miricle($100. a barrel for oil may make some inpact),I dont see Americans taking this seriously.I personally can't afford a new energy effecient car,though I drive less then 30 miles a week,that helps a bit.Even if the wealthy were motivated to buy the new vehicles(there is already a waiting list for many of them),many middle class and poor will never be able to afford them without government intervention(I'm sure the oil lobbies are all puhing for this,being the civic minded folks they are).America is the leading poluter but China will catch up quick,thanks to out-sourcing to a place that has fewer polution laws...and money meand they are buying more cars themselves.....welcome to a global economy.
What I plan to sell on Etsy.....?Very eclectic.I make some beaded leather pouches, clay sculpures,collages with pictures,fur,leather,toys.I also have some sewing ideas for a "hat-scarf cowl thingy" and am waiting for some fabric and thread.I only regret I didnt learn about this place in time to take advantage of the holiday shopping madness.Most businesses make 70% of their sales during this time of year.Oh well,I will have more things next year.I also plan on listing some of the "vintage" items I have collected over the years.That is the only thing you can sell that isn't personally hand crafted.I think several people there have their personal web-sites that they also sell things on but this makes the process much easier(less complicated then ebays and you set your prices rather then bids)so it allows for knowing that you will get at least what you put into it.I think the important thing is finding ways to advertise yourself as a seller as there are so many there that if you do a search for "knitted hats" you are likely to find over a 1,000 lpages to sort through....a bit discourageing for a shopper who will rpobably only get through the first 50 pages at most.I'm not sure how they decide whose listing comes first...totally random or based on how long you have been selling.Either way,the price of listing is so low it seems worth the effort.After all,I am making the stuff anyway,might as well clear the clutter out of my house.You can also make up some business cards with your Etsy page and give them to local consignment shops...gives them a place to see your stuff.

Thanks for the recipe, Merle!
It was in the 80's today, for N. Central Florida. Weird. I had to take the heavy blankets back off the bed again. We're supposed to be having our "winter." It usually cools down in November, with even a few freeze or frost warnings. A lady I met at the shyness group I've been going to invited me over for Thanksgiving, but I've decided not to go. If I must brave a house full of people, Id' rather it was people that I know well.

Well, I was already alarmed that the icecaps could melt in 30 years instead of the end of the century! Your news is terrible, Reika and Richard.
It's strange. I have always been distressed by the heat of summer. During the last two years most are now sharing my distress as the temperature climbs. But this November the weather is milder - even pleasant.
Bike riding seems a good way of transport.
I have a lot of catching up to do in this cafe.
Good luck Krex and Blessed Mom!

I couldn't resist, Krex. I guess it's one of those quotes that is always quoted just not quite right:
Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.
Water, water, everywhere,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink.

Thanks for the correct qoute(I dont mind being corrected...I already knkow my memory sucks)but I think I got the thought behind it right....just because your surounded by water,doesn't mean it will help if it is salt water(or polluted).

Oh, salt is wonderful I just took my 5.44 lb turkey breast out of the brine bath and going to start it roasting about 7 AM tomorrow. There was so much salt in the brine bath it I had to pour it in the gutter in the street out front to not flush it down the drains.

I hope y'all don't mind, but I'm feeling a little stressed (early - the stressful event is still a month away), and this is one of the very few places I think people might see where I'm coming from.
My brother's wife wants us to come over for a big family Christmas.
Now, a little background - back in 2000, when H had just dropped out of college, and we found out she was pregnant with Morgana, said SIL had persuaded us to move out of our duplex in what she called a "rough part" of Tacoma, WA (as far as I'm concerned, Tacoma doesn't have rough parts - I lived in Vista, CA, when Vista XIII and the Home Boys were merging. I went to sleep to the sound of gunfire), and into her house. A few months later, she told us we had to move back out again right away. The only solution that presented itself - sharing an apartment with SIL's daughter (my niece) and her husband.
It was about six months later that Niece's self-righteous, ghetto-snob attitude drove H to a suicide attempt. (Thankfully, she only had enough Vicodan on hand to get really sleepy, and the hospital was able to get the charcoal into her before liver damage set in.) Shortly afterward, we moved to CA to stay with her parents. It was about a year and a half ago that we moved back up here, along with our new mate, J (and, of course, little Iain). H has been to see SIL once since then, and it took almost a month to get her out of that depression. She's pretty sure she can handle this holiday thing, between the Paxil and the Xanax, but there's another issue. You see, SIL met my brother back when I was a geeky little undiagnosed teen - and I don't think she ever really understood what was up with me, even after the rest of us learned.
When she speaks to me, it's more speaking at me, in simple words of as few syllables as possible, with the big words always broken down into syllables. H has been concerned that she's been keeping me from "my family"; in reality, I've been happy for the excuse not to deal with SIL. I want to be the nice guy, as I've always been, but I don't know how much more I can take before I finally have to break down and scream at the woman for treating me like an idiot all these years. Sure, my first wife was hardly someone to inspire confidence in my intellect or judgment, but I'd like to think Ive gotten better since...
So, H is insisting we have to go over there. I'm already feeling stretched over this, wanting to retreat. I've no idea how I can actually handle the day in question... ![]()

I have found the screaming to be only effective to my attitude and usually either confuses them or firms up their prior opinion of me, anyway. I remember screaming in a meltdown 'doesn't anyone here speak English,' only to recognize that if anyone spoke English, they wouldn't speak to a screaming person on the street, anyway.
