Ok, I need somebody who can read military-eeze, please? My uncle Sgt Major who didn't exist? They just, finally, coughed up some of his records. My first questions are:

What could "Nerd, Phil, PA" possibly mean?

If one ends up in Bethesda Naval Hospital from Korea can we assume they were badly wounded?

Can you make heads or tails of the following (some of it makes sense, but the awards, other than the obvious ones, are unclear)?:

Some I can, but let's do it on Skype. An awful lot of info there and some is Navy/Marine lingo, so not in my league.

But ya, he was wounded. You can't make the assumption how bad it was with out more info then what I can understand. WIA is wounded in action, it might be frost bite, it might be a bullet, he might have bumped his head on a wall ducking behind a doorway in combat or in a combat zone ... I dunno, he could have been aspie and it sounds like something I would do. "WIA Korea 27Dec52 Treat&ret to du" is wounded in action and returned to duty. That sounds like a local deal and not Bethesda related. Took a while back then to do a round trip ticket and a glance at the other dates don't really relate it to a trip state side and back, with a fast glance.


The "actions" he was in, unless you're really really good with military history and I do know one that is that good, you'll have to dig into. Unfortunately I don't have a clue where Frank is anymore. Maybe some of the actions will come back to me when we go over them, my military history is pretty rusty. Also.. like with my Dad's medals, there are some with the same name that you have to dig into to see if its unit oriented or personal. When they go... "Korean Service Medal w/***", I would guess that's with clusters, which means you wear one medal, but you have different oak leaves (Army does), I think anything above 2 on the same medal and they give it a different color oak leaf, iirc. Like my Unit had 3 Presidential citations, so it would be "award w/**, I think, the ribbon counts as one and the 2 counts as repeats. I might be wrong and it's "award w/***". But in the case of the one I'm speaking of, the unit had to get pretty much wiped out to get that one, nasty history to my very small unit. Mine got nailed in some woods (forgot which) in WW1, got nailed with the Death March in Bataan and then again in Nam. Back then the Army still did State units, up until Korea I think, mine was a Texas outfit, they seemed to have that Alamo spirit. Sometimes you don't really get a choice in the matter. Interesting stuff anyway, we'll see what we might be able to figure out. The harder part is, what they use now isn't what they use for terms back in the way back, so you still may have to dig.

This one has me more then a bit bugged... "19Nov68 Counterinsurgency Operations Vietnam 21Nov68 to 691002"...that might be the bad ass Tet and I mean the really bad one. Some of the medals listed in that time slot are Vietnamese given. That location rings several bells with me and I don't know if it's because I knew someone there or for other reasons. I think it's a province, but always hard to tell. It could be some nasty ass valley as easily. The dates before 68 have me as much bugged, I knew more then one that was there before most even knew a war was on that have some god awful stories.

The person whose name we are not mentioning sounded a lot like Aspie Sister. She and her husband, Aspie Brother, caused so much trouble here. Many members were in tears over the many posts she made.

I have UbbyUbbyUbby here for a week for rest and recreation. He is the funniest, happiest boy and he talks and talks and t... I can tell you that therapy is the answer for young aspies. He is much more patient and risk taking than he used to be. When he gets frustrated, which doesn't happen often, he understands that his voice gets a whine in it and avoids a melt down.

I am reading "Look me in the Eye", in which the author says that aspergers is a different way of being. It is the young who will show this to be true.

Postie - In the middle of the night I woke up and remembered something about Uncle Sgt. Major. I found a post he had made, once, on a board that dealt with the Purple Heart medals. He said it was from Vietnam on that post. I remember that quite clearly he was talking about Viet Nam on that board. And the names of the places I listed in the earlier post where there as well.

Think it'd be worth a trip up the road to his VFW post? There can't be too many of them in that town and I bet he was a member. If anyone is still alive of his vintage maybe they might have known him? I should write to them, I guess.
