Had been helping with autopsies all day (in a pathology lab in Memphis in the early 80's) when my buddy Jamie called me up. He had heard that Billy Thorpe would be playing in a small bar - that night only. Billy Thorpe? Here in Memphis?! In a small bar? I thought it must be a joke! He picked me up and we went - were treated to a performance of the entire Children of the Sun album - only about 20 people in the whole bar! Really enjoyed it! What a bizarre day!

I saw Billy Thorpe interviewed on TV a few years ago. He'd just published his memoirs, and he confessed that he'd *ahem* had such a good time at various points of his career that there were parts of it he'd lost all memory of!

He passed away this year. But here we are, still listening to and enjoying his music, eh?

(do you really speak some dutch, or are you using babel fish? except the use of an article and a pronoum (het+mijn--> we only use one not 'the my book') all is correct ! you also say 'dat to start the subordinate sentence Ik hoop dat .... so far your lesson dutch today )

I do not know how to pronounce any of it - I am just trying to learn how to read and write in different languages to shake the rust off my brain. I took French over 30 years ago, but am very rusty in it as well. If anything I wrote came out correctly, I am shocked. But I'm trying. We have a lot of new Spanish speaking people here in my community, so I am trying to learn that as well. And one of my great grandfathers spoke Swedish, so I am trying to learn some of it.

I thought I would try to learn a little Dutch to see how it is for you to be writing to us. It's very hard - I am amazed at your ability to pick up languages so well. It is definitely not one of my strong suits. Thought I would try to surprise you and say "Hallo!"
I had to look up every word. So don't expect me to speak Dutch if ever we meet - although I may give it a try to give you a laugh!

So I should have written: "Ik hoop dat mijn gekscheren u niet heeft beledigd! U bent zeer aardig!" Thanks!

but it does not work at all, especially not when you don't know the language ...
the outcome is often hilarious, especially from french to dutch



learning languages is not something you do in a week, it's a question of years and getting better all the time.
it's more difficult to learn a language that has a different composition than your mothertongue,
from dutch to english is easier than from dutch to french.
the best way to learn is just do it, especially in a country where one speaks the language you learn, or watch television/listen radio

your sentence is correct now !
(only 'schekscheren' is more formal, a word to use in a book, you could use 'grappen'(=jokes, but than it's in plural) or 'geplaag' (=teasing))

Your English is so good - I know you said that people speak French where you live and that Dutch is your first language - do they also speak or write a lot of English where you live or did you just pick up English on the internet?

i studied english literature (was actually one of the biggest mistakes in my life, but oh well)
also : dutch people watch english movies always with subtitles from the age their able to read, as most films are in english we are quite familiar with the language from a very young age.
that's also some trick to learn language, if watching dvd's , watch Almodovar in Spanish for example and subtitle it in english, later if you're better at it, you can change into spanish subtitles

I understand. I studied pharmacy and hated every minute of it. Toooo boring. At least you didn't make it into a 25 year career like I did. (Which reminds me - where did I put my gun so I can shoot myself...)



That's a good idea! I can usually learn to read a language fairly quickly. Writing takes longer. With practice I can speak it - poorly. But I can never understand it well through my ears - probably because of my central auditory processing disorder. Still, I can try.

Daniel Tammet had a go at learning Icelandic in a week. It's really worth watching the whole film, but if you just want to see how far he got with Icelandic, that's in part 5.

oh, I am soooooo jealous! I have been stuck here in this tiny town in Oregon for years and years and years and years. . I've never even made it to the coast and it is about 150 miles from here. and you get to hang out with LAU!

oh, ok, now I am over it. I am just geplaaging I can be gracious and just love the whole thing. Wanna stop by my house on your way??
