Two years ago the kid couldn't go into a 7-11 to buy herself a slurpee because she'd have to deal with a clerk she didn't know.

Last year she couldn't call her school to schedule an appointment with the disabled student services office because she'd have to talk with someone she didn't know on the phone.

Yesterday she bought a kit at a crafts store as a gift for a friend with money she earned from her own job. Before we got home she discovered that kit was missing several pieces. On her own she said "We have to go back. I'll want my money back or an exchange." We went back, she took the kit in while I waited in the car, navigated it all - including talking to several clerks and a manager I think (it had been a clearance item, no returns) and came out with a new kit with all the pieces. She wrapped it today and is off at a party where she is giving it to her friend.

She's gonna make it after all, I think, when I'm gone. Or when she is.
