happy 3k lau!! !
condolences to all who have to work and don't want to be there - i remember many years of working 7/24 shops where i worked on all the major holidays. it never really mattered to me, as before kid i didn't do holidays - they were just an annoyance where all the shops were closed so i couldn't get a decent meal out or go shopping if i wanted to. but a lot of my co-workers found it very important to be with family and friends, or do some sort of religious observance, at this time of year so i do realize it is important for many people and not having time off kind of interferes with that. wish you had the time off that you'd like. 
the good thing about now for me is that my work literally shuts down tight for a week to save money - which means a forced vacation for one week for all employees. if we have vacation time saved up, it's paid. otherwise it isn't. the workload at my job precludes taking time off in the fall or spring, and so, since the kid and i can't do vacations during hot weather, this time of year is our annual vacation. normally i only do the one unpaid/paid vacation week, but i've not been able to take other time off all year so i have it saved up to take now. the fun part is that everything is all decorated up and there are tons of "can see it from the space station" christmas displays to go look at (as we shall tonight), and great sales at the stores. can't get those in july.... AND we can walk down the sidewalks and look in the windows in the middle of the day without it having to involve all sorts of contingency planning and getting up eary/temperature monitoring and having to be back under the a/c by 11:00am....
we do enjoy this time of year, and time off... now if i could just find my brain again things would be just peachy! 
on christmas day we will sleep late, then i will cook a lovely eye of round beef roast i've gotten at our "special occasion" butcher shop, with some large idaho baker potatos, baby carrots, and fresh bread. then perhaps we'll go see a movie. we have bought some sweets that we don't keep in the house otherwise - a torte from swiss colony and some turkish delight from the tea shop, and some really nice loose tea from our other favorite tea shop for in the evening.
and sometime before the end of the year i have decided that i, after living down the street from it for 7 years, will go climb cowles mountain and look at the ocean from up there. (the health insurance is paid up.)

I'm sure it will turn up somewhere. Have you tried calling it? That's what I do when I misplace my cell phone.

Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings, Bundles of magazines tied
up in string, These are a few of my favorite things.
Cadillacs and cataracts, and hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things.
When the pipes leak, When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad.
Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heating pads
and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Back pains, confused brains, and no need for sinnin',
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin',
And we won't mention our short, shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite things.
When the joints ache, When the hips break,
When the eyes ! grow dim ,
Then I remember the great life I've had,
And then I don't feel so bad.
