And, to all the atheists out there, may you have the merriest Tuesday ever! :santa:

When you meet the Patron Saint of Christmas in the Department Store, believe me it is a celebration EVERY capitalist may enjoy!

Yea! Got my bifocals today! I consider this my Christmas present, since I was helped out by the Modest Needs organization. Otherwise, I would still be trying to save for them. I think someone in this cafe mentioned Modest Needs, and I'm so glad that they did.

I did, a while back, in the original cafe, and again, here. :)

Modest Needs has been updated, and is better than ever.
Say you need a small amount of help, such as $500 for car repair, or rent, electric bill, etc. If you qualify, they'll pay the bill directly (you won't get the money yourself).

You can apply, donate, or both. Gift certificates are available. This is the best kind of charity I know. http://www.modestneeds.org

For help: http://www.modestneeds.org/help

To donate: https://www.modestneeds.org/donation/online.

Give a gift certificate: http://www.modestneeds.org/donation/giftcertificate.

This program is a lifesaver for folks like us aspies. Support it if you can, and it will support you. One dollar will do, and more is better!

Merry Christmas!

Christmas day is almost over. Can't wait. Almost got roped into a debate in another forum, but decided not to respond. The gist of it was having someone say that they had lost their parents in an accident, and then respond to something I said, with "At least you have a family." I could beg to differ, but wanted to respect their grief. I don't have a family. For all the love, support and concern I get from them, they might as well be dead. I've got siblings about 45 minutes away, who never call me, nor return calls. After a while, I stopped trying. I've gone through several stages of grieving, and am starting to accept that I'm quite alone in the world. There are things worse than death, after all. This holiday sort of picks at the wounds, and I just want it over with.

that's cool of you hartz, that you have not bothered the other person who was already too vulnerable.
for me it was not all roses (one familymember with lungcancer, probably last christmas for him) but we had a nice christmas and i was not too overwhelmed by all the people this time.
let me share and wish you a very warm christmas too :flower:

yeah, Lemon, I concur. Sometimes the most comfort you can give is not point out the obvious.

I spent a quiet Christmas today, I called my mom in Florida and she sounds a lot better than she did last year.
She is on anti-depressant medication.

You're right. And I have seen so many pointless flame wars started, over something just like what I mentioned. If it weren't for WP, I don't know when or where I would have learned to be tactful. :?

Hartz, it does get old, doesn't it? These are the same ilk of folks who become teachers who make all the kids make Father's or Mother's Day cards or presents, without checking to see if all the kids HAVE mothers or fathers or grandfathers/mothers. Or scoutmasters who have "bring dad" or "bring mom" day events without checking to see if it's applicable. The same kind of folks who automatically assume you want to be with your birth family at all costs, and that there was any semblance of love in the equation. They assume that what they had/have is what everybody has and don't bother to look farther than the end of their own noses.

This is a manufactured holiday, Hartz. Designed to sell a lot of goods to keep the storekeepers happy. Once upon a time it was a religious observance, for the most part. But that's pretty much gone. Now it's just a weird, artificial construct foisted on all of us. Whether we're Christian or not, or have family or not, or....

I hope your tomorrow is better than your today. And it's just as well you said nothing - the folks who were grieving can't see past their grief. Nothing you could have said would have gotten through.

Thanks, Nan. That's a good summary of what this so called holiday has come to mean. I have never seen so many holiday "battle wounded" until I joined WP. It's sad and validating at the same time. I compounded the pain by calling my mother and wishing her a Merry Christmas. Dumb knee jerk response, even though I swore I wouldn't bother. She has her favorites, and I'm not one of them.

Christmas afternoon, in the bath, I read page 203 of "I Am a Strange Loop" by Douglas R. Hofstadter, and the first two words of the page were "Santa Claus".

And... 203 is the product of two distinct primes, which are each one more than the first two perfect numbers, which are of the form (2^p-1)*2^(p-1) where p is prime and so is 2^p-1 (a Mersenne prime). The next perfect number to be followed immediately by a prime is the fifth one, i.e. 33550336.

I though you all needed to know that.

Gödel, Escher, Bach was agreeably twisty (the parts I understood, anyway). :) Metamagical Themas looks intriguing, and so does I am a Strange Loop. But if I ever get around to reading any more of Hofstadter's work, it'll most likely be Le Ton beau de Marot.
