Happy New Year, y'all, and here's to another one that didn't do us in - quite!

I'm celebrating in fine style - H is out at a party (with a driver - one of her friends wangled a limo), and I'm sitting here with a cup of hot coffee and Starbucks coffee liqueur, and "Knights of the Old Republic" on the XBox (I'm trying a pretty min/maxed Scout/Consular combo, and actually managed to reconcile the feuding families on Dantooine! Yay for lightside me!). Iain is abed, and 'Gana is sitting here pretending to surf the 'Net on her disconnected keyboard (from the late, lamented desktop).

Did have to step outside and yell into the darkness - a firework either was set off or landed right outside our back porch, next to J's new car. No harm done, thankfully, but it was rather irksome. (Can't wait until J's promotion - then we should be making enough to move out of this dump, and away from the dumpees!)

Well, was celebrating in fine style, anyway - H got separated from her friends at the place they went, and hasn't been able to raise the other cell phone. On top of that, her cell phone seems to have died. It's 45 minutes away, since the cops will be out in force, and I'd have to take at least 'Gana along (Iain would stay sound asleep while I was gone, but 'Gana has a tendency to wake up in the middle of the night). I'm trying to coordinate thirdhand (one friend's husband has cell number of other friend), but at the moment there's not a damn thing I can do to remedy the situation, which is just frakking guaranteed to drive me right up the ol' metaphorical wall. Arrrrgggghhhhh!! !

Oh the joys of the new year when you are young (ish), Deacon Blue. I used to spend my time running around for teenage kids.

Ongoing Skype-v-Wrong Planet woes: I doubled the size of my IE browser cache, but this did not fix the problem. As long as Skype is running, I get about 30 seconds max on WP, and then the page stops responding. To resurrect an expression from my childhood, "Wouldn't THAT frost ya!" :x

Yeah it would and yeah it did. I was having trouble with IE being unstable for a long time. But it waas just plain unstable and had nothing to do with Skype. Even to the point of a complete redoing of the hard drive, it didn't help, well not immediately. Here's the bad news, I have no idea why it's running stable now. Ok this is going to really sound wierd, when it freezes are there youtube things on that page? Typically if your active-x drivers aren't current you'll get a drop down asking if you want to update them, I don't trust drop downs and go to the source and see if my drivers are up to date. Mine seemed to go very unstable when there were youtubes for a good long while, it no longer does, but this is after updates and using the registry cleaner feature in CCleaner or if there was a problem on YouTubes end it doesn't seem to be there anymore. Or is it any page about 30 seconds no matter what? What happens if you aren't on WP and on Skype? You running the standard XP firewall? If you hit control-alt-delete in sequence holding them as you do it will bring up a screen telling you what is running, it also will tell you what your CPU load is doing, it will also tell you what your mem usage is, if you're on the correct tabs. If you have a ton of things running in the back ground this can be a big burden on your system. Have you put any new software latley? Have you gone through your Skype settings carefully? Now, there are good folks on WP that have way more knowledge about this stuff then i do and if you move what's going on to the computer section, you just might find an idea that would solve it. The last thing I would ask when you do a windows update, do you hit the custom button to look for updates? If you do not, do so, it very often has important updates that you won't get if you use the express button or let windows do its own updates. You don't really need to answer any of these, just some ideas of what you might look at, if you haven't already.

Welp, all's well that ends, or something like that. H finally got home (it's almost 5am local), in tears, ready for her Xanax and Paxil. Turns out that she got grabbed by a couple of guys, triggering an anxiety attack because of an unpleasant incident about ten years ago, and her "friends" disappeared into the crowd. It never occurred to the one with the cell to step outside the building for a moment, get a clear signal, and call H's cell phone, either. (I thought it was us old fogies who were supposed to be having the trouble adjusting to the 21st Century!)

Anywho, she made it out to girl's truck (the limo fell through, for reasons I don't yet know), so scared she wet herself, crawled inside (girl also wasn't smart enough to lock her truck, fortunately), and experienced the natural sequel to anxiety, no sleep since 8am, and crashing blood sugar (H is diabetic, too) - she fell asleep. When it finally occurred to girl to check the truck (after friend's husband and I got on a three-way call with her, and I told her to), she found H asleep, and immediately accused H of getting drunk and passing out. (I've seen H drink quite heavily on rare occasion, once to the point of vomiting [although the cold medicine might have been a factor that time]; I've never once seen her pass out.)

By the time she got back to her own car, H was so mad she was sober, and so scared she's vowed never to go to a large club again, something I have no problem with. :) Right now she's providing emergency transport to another friend, who got himself stranded at a house party about ten miles away. (Fortunately, Xanax doesn't make her sleepy.)

On the plus side, she already had an appointment with her psych tomorrow morning...

Happy freaking New Year, everybody.

Chuck stumbles in, collapses supine on floor, raises party kazoo to lips, and uses it to say:
"Happy New Year Ev'rybody!! ! " :P  (this isn't as easy as it sounds).

Nothing quite beats working New Year's eve -
treating obnoxious drunks, car accident victims,
pool hall fight hoodlums, firework burns,
and a stomach virus crowd.

Except adding several police calls to handle
the drunk passed out in the men's room,
the dumpster that someone set on fire,
the husband/wife shoplifting duo, and
the meth user with a forged script.

Whoopie!! !
...but I sincerely wish each and every one of you a prosperous, fun-filled, healthy new year!

...I'm headed for bed - will catch up with everybody later....
(Lemon, you's a sweetie! Hope you feel ok when you wake up!) :cherry:

Glad to hear everyone made it home safe and (relatively) sound.

Has H had some sort of self defence training? Any sort? If she can make a plan, it'll help take away a lot of the anxiety.

If Lau gets to do a "best of", I want to contribute a "best of" of a different sort:
This was my favorite quote of the year:  :P

My New Year's resolution is to learn contact juggling with the acrylic balls I got kid3 for Christmas. Thanks, Gromit. My children are in very real danger of becoming juggling orphans.

This is mesmerizing:
German Wheel - Cirque du Soleil

I have seen 2 Cirque du Soleil productions, Alegria and Varekai. They were both incredible.

Flying Man - Alegria

Alegria

Water Meteors - Varekai

Flight of Icarus - Varekai

Clowns - Varekai
