Postie, that is so freaking cool...now is that in the rock, which I think it is, but the color's off on my computer, and that affects the visual depth for me...but that is so cool.

I went to the dinosaur digs in Northern Utah and Colorado, and that was...incredible. They were digging up these huge plant eating dinosaur skeletons with dental tools and packing the exposed bits in what looked like plaster. There's a main center for education there where a dinosaur graveyard is being unearthed. This is in a national park, and the government built a beautiful building around the dig site, and there's an area right next to the dig where they process finds from other parts of the park. People come not just for the archeological digs (and tee shirts, of course) but also to hike and kayak in the valley. It's a really beautiful area, and it's a huge park. The colors of the area are subtle and rich...My niece and I enjoyed being there, and I want to go back. Do some hiking and bugging archeologists.

R.

Yeah its in a greyish rock, sedimentary. It's an impression.

That would be the "bone men" as we called them and they had a reputation in the field as being crazier then we were and that is not easy.

I think one of the biggest disappointment's in school was when they no longer let us do show'n'tell.

Postie --

Now I understand 'Postpaleo'. Nice imprint there -- one to be proud of. One of the good things about Iowa is that our bedrock is generally fossiliferous limestones. When I was growing up, I could spend hours just looking at the limestone gravel in our neighbor's newly-graveled driveway -- brachiopod shells, sections of crinoid stems, and what passed for coral back then. No trilobites tho...

Never got into any serious collecting, but it might be something to look into now that I have more time.

Funny subject for the 'Dino-Aspies' to discuss!

Sleepy and Duncan --

I see your parents used much the same strategy that mine did. In my case, we had a reel-type push (i.e., muscle powered) mower for the lawn that I was in charge of. They did not need to 'get after' me much to keep the lawn mowed, as if the grass got too tall, pushing that @#*&(*&#(&*^ mower became a real effort. Of course, after I left home, the first thing my father bought was a power mower...

Nannarob --

Tornadoes always leave a mess, and will absolutely level an area. However, for all the damage that they cause, there is *usually* very few hurt or killed anymore, which was *not* the case the other night. In areas that are prone to having tornadoes frequently, there are a lot of warning systems in place (sirens, weather spotters, special Doppler radars, weather radios that alert you when a tornado might occur in your area, and then warn you again when one has been spotted in your area). In areas with those systems, there is usually sufficient warning to get to a safe spot (the basement). Areas that get them less frequently don't always have the warning systems, and people are less aware of the warning signs to look for, which is what happened the other night.

Everyone --

Thanks for the welcomes, the muffin and the espresso (which I will pass on as I get w-w-w-W-ire-d-d-d drinking it!) It's good to feel part of a community larger than one (which is the situation I was in before finding WP).

Ok, I need to eat some breakfast and get off to work. I'll Czech in later. (As you will find, I like puns. Remember -- A pun in time saves nine!) :)

espresso over here, then! Can I have mine with an extra shot of espresso? :shaking2:

We have many beautiful rocks out this way, but not much opportunity to look for them stuck in the middle of the huge city when one does not drive. Still, if one is diligent, one can find surprises in the desert landscaping of one's neighbors....

OMG I just saw footage of the twisters! No wonder you are worried.

Chuck is fine, I'm sure of it for some reason. I watched the late news last night and what I saw in the States that got hit had me in tears. Such devastation in a matter of hours. And so much sadness. :(

My angelgirl is still sick so she'll be in the tree with me again today. I think it's time for a visit to the doc. My ADHD whirlwind has been reduced to laying on the sofa and she's hardly been speaking. That worries me far more than the fever.

On the positive side, I've started taking an on-line diploma program course to do Medical Transcription and am nearly done the first 2 modules.

ROCKS??? I have buckets of rocks, semi-precious gemstones and small fossils that the kids and I collect in the mountains every summer. We've found garnets and amethysts, coal, quartz, mica, fools gold but no opals. We don't dig for any. Every time I move I think I need to get rid of the rocks, but they stay. As does the box of driftwood.

I'm sure Chuck is OK, too.

YAY for blessedmom! That's great! About the online diploma program, not the sick kid. I hope she gets better soon.

I had some driftwood once, but I divorced the #!@^$^%*&^(%^ (sorry, nannarob. had to be done)

Thankyou for the enthusiasm.

Nannarob, do you still have your soap?

Eastern religions would say that you are still carrying the driftwood around with you if it invokes such negativity. Just an observation.

Do we all have boxes of rocks that we've squirreled away?

Petrified wood? Someone wanted some? Every time we go back to Texas on the way we drive through petrifiedwoodland and there are roadside stands giving the stuff away to get you to stop in....

And a true observation. I work on it all the time.

nannarob, please no cinnamon in the soap. I'm allergic.

Hi Billard!

I trust you will accept my withtraction of my incorrect correction of your correct statement on that other thread that isn't this one?

And... someone has just removed a word from reality. I can find no trace of the word "withtract". It is almost synonymous with "withdraw". Who has stolen it? Own up!

"Redraw" is a word (I think) but it's meaning is not remotely close to "retract" or "withdraw." Still, "withtract" is a nice word. "Does that come withtract of land?"

Someone should have named him Tigger!!

I had li' girl at the doctor this morning. We can look forward to another 3 or 4 days of the coughing and fevers but there is no infection or chest congestion. And I get a 5 hour break tonight and tomorrow night while I go to work.

Lau --

No problem. I do have to admit it took me a while to understood the thread of which you spoke.

In any case, I'm pretty thick-skinned, and have been known to be wrong. (Once. In 1963. September 17, 4:02 PM. But it rarely bothers me! Sorry, That's a joke -- I have a bizarre sense of humor!)
