Sounds like me, when I was clever.

Are you making fun of me? Because I can assure you, NO ONE said I was clever for quite some time after that.

I tried to conform, but the entire classroom and dorm environment gave me a bit of a breakdown. I was homebound through some of high school for the same reason.

I did get a certificate online in Library Science, which was difficult, but I managed.

I'm going to the Teaism meeting this Sunday for the first time! It's for the Asperger Adults of Greater Washington...I'm really worried about going into the place and not being able to find anyone though. Here is my impression of me: "Um..eh hem, excuse me, do YOU have autism? No, sorry, sorry...how about YOU?"

Will you be there?

What is your first name? Benji

Age: 19

Location: East London

Hobbies and Interests: Internet, reading, watching films, listening to music, playing drums...

Why are you here? Because I'm awaiting an Asperger's dx, and since having a laptop and not having to share the internet with my brother I have more internet time and less things to do on the internet.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): N/A yet.

Favorite subjects: English Lit, Media, Biology, Drama, Art, History...

Year/Grade: I'm in my second year of university. It's extremely hard, and I have failed every single module involving group work so far. It's also upped my anxiety level so I'm going around in circles.

Favorite music: I guess I listen to punk, blues and jazz most often but I like lots of different music.

Books: Can't choose a favourite book. I love reading. I prefer fiction which is apparently not very aspie. I just find that a lot of factual books are difficult for me as I have little concept of time and find it hard to seperate revelvant events and random dates hard to remember. I like most aspects of fantasy.

TV shows/Movies: At the moment I'm really loving Pan's Labyrinth, but I like a lot of films, and a fair few TV shows.

Instrument: Drums. I play a little guitar, a little bass, a little tin whistle, a little recorder. I'm also teaching myself harmonica (blues harp to be precise) and I'd like to play sax.

Do you like sports? No. Although I did do karate, go swimming, go horseriding and played basketball for a bit when I was younger. I'm too passive for my own good.

Family: I live with my mum, dad and younger (but taller) brother. I also have a half sister who doesn't live with us. My mum's the youngest of ten so we have a large family. My pets count as family too. I have a dog, two rats, rabbit, snake and a pond full of goldfish.

Clothing: I tend to look like I've falling into a wardrobe and clamoured out accidentally dressed... that's how my dad put it once and it stuck. I wear a lot of alternative clothes, but mainly it's about comfort. I guess I look kind of 'quirky'. I tend to only wear DMs and cons as footwear because most other kinds hurt my feet.

How did you find this website? Google ages ago, and also a few people from Gestalt use it.

Job: I'm a sales assistant. I only work four hours on a Saturday morning and it takes the rest of the day for me to recover. I have the bad luck of being on the till.

Plans for the future? I'd like to make some independant films, and I'd also like to be a body piercer (although it's a job that involved some level of socialising it would be mostly on my terms and I'd be able to do the job without being interrupted, unlike my current job - I also can't think of many jobs I could do that don't involve being stuck in an office. I don't have the attention span or organisation skills for anything involving office work). I'd also like to write a book or two.

Any comments? I think I've gone on quite enough for now.

What is your first name? Creig

Age: over 50

Location: San Francisco

Hobbies and Interests: Alpine skiing, computer software, photography

Why are you here? Not really sure -- curious, I guess, or maybe so I won't feel like I'm the only one, but I already knew that, in a theoretical sort of way. At my age, hardly expect, or need, to make friends. (No offense meant, just that huge age differences don't make for compatibility, and I've got enough friends to handle for now.)

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): Not. But many of the characteristics sound very familiar. But not sure. Does everyone with past difficulty making friends and interested in math/science have AS? Probably not, but some of the other stuff sort of fits too.

Favorite subjects: Huh? Do you mean back when I went to school? Of course, math, science, engineering, computer science.

Year/Grade: Finished MS EE degree in the 3rd quarter of the last century.

Favorite music: Whatever. Hate pop, country, rap, opera. I could make a list, but it changes. Don't like the same thing over and over.

Books: Technical stuff.

TV shows/Movies: News, Science, technical stuff. Oh, I did like "6 Feet Under", "Dead Like Me", "Queer as Folk"(American-Canadian version) and "Huff" when they were on a few years ago. "Noah's Arc" was good last year. There isn't anything that I like right now.

Instrument: Huh? Not since grade school. Been known to plink around experimentally on a keyboard on rare occasions but don't know how to play at all. Takes to much time to learn.

Do you like sports? Hate anything competetive (brings back horrible memories of school), and I am bored with spectating most sports, but I love to ski, and am very good at it (as long as I stay far away from other skiers/riders so I don't bump into them). So I AM coordinated after all, in spite of the experience in school! Besides that, I've taken up bicycling again. Used to swim too, but not lately, and not very good at it. Gave up running to save the knees.

Family: Live with my partner. Everyone else in my own family is far away. Do have a couple friends and lots of acquaintances, though.

Clothing: Sometimes. Oh... nice soft fleece, or if I must go out, jeans or something more formal like khaki, or g*d forbid, something synthetic -- I hate anything that I cannot wash at home. Whatever.

How did you find this website? TV news --> Google (even corrected my spelling) --> Wikipedia --> here

Job: Sort of. Tele-consulting with a company 1000 miles away on computer software.

Plans for the future? Future? Hmmmph. Just trundling along with what I'm doing, keeping my head above water, until something better comes along.

Any comments? A nephew was diagnosed with Attention Deficit and was told it runs in families. Not sure if that's related to anything I've experienced, but my mind did wander a lot in school. I thought the difficulty with sports was explained because I had a physical condition that kept me from being active until 4th grade (2 years of home schooling as an invalid in almost complete isolation, and 2 years at public school with severely restricted physical activity), and so the other kids had 4 years of physical and social development over me, and teased me mercilessly. Because of the embarassment, I avoided any sports, so I never caught up with them until college age when I realized I better get into shape if I want to live a long life. Then I discovered skiing, and found out I wasn't so bad athletically after all. I blamed my parents for not making any effort to put me through physical therapy so I could catch up with the other kids and be as good as them. Would have needed some kind of social therapy too. Maybe they thought in a year or so, I would automatically catch up with the other kids my age so never mind spending money on extra therapy, but that wasn't happening. So I blamed all that.

But other stuff about AS fits too, so I don't know who/what to blame now. Everyone just thought I was kind of odd, but harmless, and nobody suspected anything like AS or did anything about it, and I didn't know any better either.

Later on I put myself through years of therapy to deal with social problems, and it helped a little. It doesn't matter now, I'm sort of contented, but went through hell when I was young.

Why is this called "Wrong" Planet? Wouldn't "Different" Planet be more generous?

At least "Different Planet" how I've felt. But as a gay person, I doubly felt I'm from a "different" planet, meaning in the gay community, I felt a little bit more at home, but not quite there yet. With strangers, it's always "why don't you say anything ... (does it mean you dislike me)?" or if I do say something, I sometimes manage to find the very worst thing to say without realizing it until after it's come out of my mouth. I guess that does sound a lot like AS, but I'm not sure the cause of it is the same as the "typical" case. But given (from Wikipedia, at least) nobody knows what causes it (or if there is a single cause), maybe it doesn't matter if the cause of my condition was different from others, or started at a slightly later age. Then again, maybe the causes I am aware of just compounded an AS condition that I already had but nobody knew I had. How could anyone tell now?

What is your first name?

Andrew

Age:

21

Location:

Umatilla, Florida, U.S.A.

Hobbies and Interests:

Expansive and bewildering. Sounds cooler than the normal string of "Music, Films, Literature, Computers, blah blah blah."

Why are you here?

Fear, inability to understand, curiosity, deep seated feelings that I need to Belong somewhere. Blah blah blah.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder):

Have not been yet, and may not be. For all I know this is something unrelated and I don't belong here. Of course that could just be my self destructive tendencies trying to prevent any sort of healing or repair etc etc etc. According to friends and relatives I fit to a tee. My intention is that when I get financially stable I will seek a legitimate diagnosis... or I could bum money off the aunt that first suspected it. I'd feel bad about that because it would be a long time until I could pay here back. The old man always told me that debt is bad, so I take debts very seriously, both ways. EDIT: However, I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 5.

Favorite subjects:

Ah.... school. English and Psychology.

Favorite music:

A respect and love for all forms of music... But I prefer Blues, Metal, Modern Rock, Movie Soundtracks... that sort of thing.

Books:

William King, Science Fiction, that kind of stuff.

TV shows/Movies:

House, Heroes, Star Wars, Star Trek(I LOVE THEM BOTH DAMNIT! YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO JUDGE ME!) Thats about it. The rest of is just utter crap that I despise.

Instrument:

Bass Guitar. One that I never play despite a birthright of potential. (The men in my family have an oddly natural affinity for music.)

Do you like sports?

HOCKEY?!

Clothing:

Hawaiian shirts, short sleeve buttondowns. Jeans, Sandals, shorts, a baseball cap and a nice leather cap that was a gift from my best friend in highschool.

How did you find this website?

Found a link on Wikipedia.org.

Job:

Unemployed, but oddly for a potential aspie, all of my work experiance is in customer service.(It's bizarre, I can communicate in a professional sense, but as soon as it gets recreational, I literally transform into a gibbering inept mass.)

Plans for the future?

I've always had a love for both Journalism and Medicine. I'm actually considering becoming a Nurse... or a journalist... Or hell Both. Just as soon as I can stand to talk on the phone for more than a couple minutes and stop fearing the open road.
