Greetings old friends and new. Welcome Heron, morning_after & Sartresue (I'm guessing you are a lover of Sartre, Sue. If that's the case, I am too, even if it's not the case, actually.)
We'll be back in PA on the 28th. I'll be able to spend more time here. Sounds to me, from what I've read, that everyone is doing fine, hanging in there and having a good old time in the cafe.
I had an interesting experience in the post office this morning. I was sending books home so I wouldn't have to carry so much on the plane. The post office was packed and a half hour away from Noon closing time on Saturday. There were only two clerks on duty ( a female and a male) and they were doing their best to be helpful and polite. A woman customer was being waited on, she wanted to post a box but she hadn't filled in the information on her package. The female clerk gave her a proper label and politely asked her to step aside to fill in the information so that another customer could helped in the meantime. She assured the woman that she wouldn't lose her place in line but would be taken as soon as she was finished filling out her package. The woman began to show an attitude. The male clerk called "next" and I thought that would be me so I began to approach the counter. The female clerk notice that the woman had finished filling out her package and said "No, that would be this woman, she is ready now." So the woman went to the male clerk and he proceeded to help her. I then was called up to be waited on by the female clerk. All the while the woman complained about what terrible service she was receiving, and how she was made to wait twice and should have been permitted to fill out her package at the counter and how this would never happen in her hometown post office. She went on and on and on, really being rude to the male clerk. She told him she was going to be making a complaint about the service. Finally, (and I'm saving you about a page of dialogue that went on between the woman and the male clerk with occasional comments by the female clerk) finally, the male clerk told the woman to "Shut Up". You could have heard a pin drop in the post office. The woman then said "Well, now I really am going to file a complaint, you just told me to shut up." I knew the clerk was at his wits end and shouldn't have told the woman to shut up, but he really was driven to that point, and I felt bad for him. So.........I said to the woman "Well, to tell you the truth, I was just about to tell you to shut up as well. After all, I don't need this stress and neither do the clerks or the rest of the customers." I saw a look of relief and appreciation come over the faces of both postal clerks, but especially the male clerk. I continued in an effort to lighten up the atmosphere, "Everyone should just relax, I don't want to see anyone going postal" The other customers and the clerks all laughed. The woman seemed subdued since she realized that she was out numbered and had no support for her bad behavior.
One more unrelated comment. I love Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City. Heard him speaking on C-Span yesterday. A very brilliant and charming man. Terrific orator. Really progressive thinker. I think my new obsession is going to be C-Span.
