YowlingCat coined the term in her second post on WP. She then went on to found the Cafe, which was originally in this forum.

Due to some shuffling about, that thread went walkabout, and I essentially reopened it as this thread.

I work for a museum so I'm liking the historical context.

I am glad to see you again, Hartz. I did not want to bother you in case you were resting.
You should read Gromit's post about an anal constriction idea book that is supposed to relieve diarrhea, er, depression. It is a hoot.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to read any part of an Amazon book, outside of the USA (I don't know if Canadians can read it?). The reviews give hints as to what it is like.

I always liked my Honda 50 manual. When talking about remembering to shut off the choke once the bike had warmed up, and saving petrol... the phrase went something like:
Quote:
This tiny consideration will assist to prevaricate engine juice.

Sounds like that was translated from the original Greek into English, then Japanese, then back to English.

Goodnight, Lauri. Sweet dreams.

I will have to keep you in my prayers, if that's okay with you.

Keeping me in your prayers is fine with me. :) And I said a few myself last night and today. I'm feeling much better today. I have faith that everything will turn out okay, as it seems to most of the time.

Actually, I did read that post, and found myself laughing. It was shortly after that, that I realized that maybe I'll survive all this stuff, somehow. :)

Welcome, Zonder. Somewhere around here there's a discussion thread about that very thing: take a chunk of text, run it thru one of those online translation tools, then translate it back into the source language the same way, and see what comes out at the end. Hilarity ensues....

In Canada I once worked in a federal-government organisation, and you could always tell which documents, manuals and communiqués had started off in French. (Or at least I could.)

Hartz, I'm glad to hear you're feeling better.

Thanks for the greeting - I'll have to try the translation thing. I work at a place that deals with a western European language that I don't know too well, and I'd love to mess with people's minds.

Hello and welcome, Zonder and gneiss. It's always good to see new faces here. If there was an intervention available, Zonder, I would have tried it by now. Those 4,000 posts seemed to sneak up on me out of nowhere. I'm not sure if I should celebrate, or hide!

Freakin' impressive - what does that average out to per week? Oh, that's math, I'm sure some math genius here can figure it out. I don't need to know if you have math challenges like I have (such as not having a calculator at hand).

Random observation of the day. At the top of this page, in my browser, there is a display ad which reads as follows:

Quote:
2 New Unread Messages
One Of Your Friends Thinks Your Sexy! Find Out Who!

The "Your" in place of "you're" is immediately offputting, and the overuse of capitalisation clinches it: amateur hour; avoid like the plague.

Yes, I'm a usage snoot.

Snoot: According to David Foster Wallace, this stands for "Sprachgefühl necessitates our ongoing tendance," or "Syntax nudniks of our time," depending on whether or not you are one.

It averages out to........ way too bloody many!!

 That would be my biggest math challenge, too. Good thing I have fingers and toes and never need to count past 20!

Off-putting for sure. Capitalization - I can take it or leave it, depending on the tone of the message.
So, was this from someone at WP?

You're not old enough to remember Ted Mack's amateur hour, are you?
