Hello all,

I came in search of a website where I could connect with people who either have or now someone who has Asperger's syndrome. My brother Ryan, is 22 and a college student living with high functioning autism or Asperger's. He recently moved in with me to a 2 bedroom apartment after living with my parents his whole life. We're only 9 months apart because he was born 3 months premature at a whopping 2lbs 2oz. My parents never thought he'd be able to live "on his own" and here he is making a big step.

However, along with this big step comes a huge change for myself. I took care of Ryan growing up since my parents were always working. Now this is different though, as I am the only thing he has at school. Its started out as overwhelming and its a been hard on my boyfriend, who has never been around someone with Asperger's before. Ryan is a pretty happy kid, but he gets stuck in his ways and can be a bit self centered (which comes as no surprise, seeing that his disability does play a role).

I'm hoping by reading and posting here that I can learn a bit more about this and work towards making my brother an independent person.

Nice to meet you all :D

Candace

Nice to see you here. I was also a preemie and have AS (and am blind). Maybe if you educate your bf about AS, he will learn to be more accepting of your brother?

Welcome Candace, it's great to see someone educating themselves on the issue in order to better help a loved one, it's very sweet of you!

That's what I am hoping to do :) So far he has been great with my brother and is trying to learn as much as he can.
