Hi. Last week my nearly 7 yo son was diagnosed with ASD. The psychologist isn't quite sure where on the spectrum he falls yet until we get the SLP reports and some IQ testing done. So we are unsure whether he is an aspie or not.

He has been having a lot of problems at school, and that is what urged us to go forward towards getting him diagnosed. However, we have known that he was most likely on the spectrum for at least the past 3-4 years, despite some 'experts' saying that he wasn't. We had decided to rely on their opinion which was probably a mistake.

We live in Australia, and I just found out that we (and the school) have missed the deadline for applying for funding for a classroom aid for him for the next school year, so it looks like we may have to self fund an aid.

Hi Vegemite Toast,

If your son is already considered to be "on the spectrum", then aspergers is probably one of the best places he could be.

The IQ tests are being done to ensure that his IQ doesn't differ significantly from the norm. Aspies are IQ normal.

My sons are 8 and 5 and both are getting a lot of help at school.

As soon as your son gets a label (don't worry, it really is ONLY a label - it shouldn't restrict what he can do), you'll need to talk to the school and seek an IEP. You don't need to wait for next year to get this in place and some assistance.

(and I'm in Australia, obviously).
