Hello all, im new to this site i have a 6yr old son with asperger's, we were in aw of him when he began walking at 9months, began talking at 10 and began moving furniture to where he believed it was suppose to be at age 2. At 2yrs old we stood back and watched as he took a power drill climbed on a tall bar stool and took the door off of the hinges because he didnt want the door to be shut as the door fell to the floor we stood speechless. Also at 2yrs he would stay awake for 24 to 48hrs with my husband and i taking shifts to stay awake with him. Others told us he was high spirited, strongwilled and stubborn but we knew it was more than that as others began to see we reached out for help when he was 3 taking him to several doctors untill we found one that knew what it was and refered us to Tulsa Ok to 2 seperate doctors who we see monthly. He is now on 3 medications and we have seemed to hit a wall no one in this area knows what aspergers is and our son is now aware that he is different from the other children at school we have been informed that there is a school in Tulsa that specializes in childern with aspergers but tution fees are 10,000 per year. Does anyone know of any asistance available to help with tuition fees? And if anyone is in the same boat im in ild love to know im not alone

Hey Jacalyn,

Welcome to your stay at Wrongplanet

This is the right place to learn and discover about autism and aspergers syndrome. :D
I'm afraid I wouldn't have enough knowledge about it so technically I can't really help you on that one but I do know a few people here who might know alot more than me about things like that and I think she went through a similar patch....

Happy Posting :)

Jacalyn,

You might get more responses if you post in the Parent's Discussion forum ... but here goes with what I can suggest. First, you might want to find out what financial aid the school itself offers. Many private schools have some financial aid available to students who need it, although the amounts vary.

You could do a computer search for grants that might be available for individuals in your situation. There are lots of obscure, small grants and it would probably take a lot of time, but it might be worth it.

The other route would be to see whether your school district would privately place your son at this school. If the school district is truly not equipped to educate him, they might be willing. They are required, by law, to provide every child with a free, appropriate public education. When they can't do that at the local public school, they sometimes place students in private schools (at their expense). Have you started the IEP process? That starts with an evaluation. Wrightslaw has lots of information about the law for special education, and they have a free e-newsletter. The site is so big that it can be overwhelming, but it is still a good place to start.

Welcome to Wrong Planet!
