I'm thinking I have some kind of mild aspergers... I've known people who have had it and none of them have been particularly functional people, they all needed some sort of help. I definitely don't fit into that category (I've lived alone for most of the past twelve years and I'm now 30; I'm reasonably financially successful, travel a lot and I'm ever so slightly above average at cleaning up after myself). So I'm not sure how 'level of functionality' plays into it.

However, I tend to pick a topic and focus intensely on it, while ignoring things that I really shouldn't be ignoring. Sometimes I'm ignoring broader implications of the narrow subject matter that I am focusing on. I've done this since I was little (e.g. collecting baseball cards while knowing nothing about baseball).

I've been accused of having an accent. I've moved around a lot, but never to any of the places I've been accused of having an accent from. Sometimes I find it difficult to use language the way other people do and since I've generally lived in melting pot cities, I'm often just assumed to be a foreigner, which is fine as long as I don't have to go into deeper explanation.

I'm a little uncoordinated.

I'm *extremely* anal retentive about the functional state of the machines and mechanical items in my life. This has helped me to be successful in my engineering field - people know that if I design it, it's going to completely work - but can also create some friction. I'm not sure if this is an Aspergers trait or if it's just me.

I don't have a lot of friends, but the interpersonal relationships I have are not often strained - I get along with the people I'm close to. Once they get used to me :)

So hi, I'm Adam.

Hi, thanks Tim, I was in Austin earlier in the week. Other than the freak snowstorm, I miss the warmth.

I didn't realize it until you said this, but people always ask where I'm from too. I think they have a hard time making sense of me, and assume I am a foreigner.

I am from Texas, and people there used to ask if I was from Europe. I think they were confused when I said, "I'm from here." Now I live in Tennessee and people ask me if I am from "up north."

So, once I asked a girl where she was from, and she got upset. Someone told me it was because she was asian american. I didn't mean that I wanted to know where she was from in Asia, just if she was from Dallas, or Houston? I didn't know how to explain it then.

Hi Jordan. I think you may be in the same situation as me... somewhere between normal and full blown AS. I think the girl who got upset was a little oversensitive. I saw your post about seeking a dr, and the only thing I really have to say about that is doctors are not all created equal. You will have to use a lot of your own deductive reasoning.

Good luck.

Welcome to WP! Thanks for the great intro. From what I have read, there are a good number of people who didn't realize they were Apsies until it was brought to their attention somehow and then they investigated it. I haven't been diagnosed, (though I'm scheduled to see a specialist), but the symptoms seem to fit so well... And from the people I've met here, it just seems like my kind of crowd. What a relief :)
