So, I am new here, have known that there was something not typical about me as far back as I can remember, (and that is back to the age of 3 or so) but I never knew there was a name for it until a few years ago.
Have not been formally diagnosed as an Aspie, however, there are more "oh yea, that sounds like you" moments whenever a story comes on or I read some information online.
My wife, aunt, few friends I have not driven crazy, and other assorted buffet items in my life all tend to call me whenever there is something in the news or on the Discovery channel and the conversation usually starts something like "Hey Chris (that's me by the way) I saw this show on "little professors" and it reminded me of when you were a kid" or "There was an article in the paper about coping with AS and it reminded me of you" It helps to put a name to the things that set me apart.
I am from Oregon originally, now live outside Boston, (and have for close to 20 years)
If a topic interests me, I will research it to death and never forget that information. Yet, ask me to place a face to a name of someone I met 5 minutes ago, and I can't do it. I can tell you every detail down to the smells in the room and how the light played through the trees the day my grandmother died, but ask me to explain what you are feeling by looking at your body language, and I am lost.
I often ask people why they don't just say what they mean, or mean what they say, only to be told that is not how people are supposed to work. I don't get the non-verbal cues that most people do, but I can smell when someone changes shampoo or perfume or aftershave and I tend to say something which gives people the creeps.
I am very pleased that a good friend I have kept since high school pointed me here. (She is an Aspie too, which in retrospect, explains why we have been friends for almost 20 years now.)
I hope to be able to explore this site more in depth and contribute as much as I can to help others, as well as to learn more about how others make things work. Heck, I might even talk my wife into joining as well! (She is NT, but loves me anyway
