Hey everybody,
I am an almost-30 mother of one and newlywed who just realized that I most likely have Asperger's or something very close to it. This happened when I attended two back-to-back meetings based regarding evaluations done on my almost-4 year old son (at his preschool). All parties kept saying the same thing: he can't sit still for 2 minutes (literally), he plays beside other kids instead of with them, and he lacks pincer grasp and some gross motor skills. Nobody at either meeting said what this all meant (we had a hunch he was ADHD, but no clue that it could be anything on the Autism Spectrum).
On the day of the second meeting, I later watched the season premier of Parenthood...and there was this boy acting just like my kid. Although this is a tv show and the kid on the tv show was about 8 and my little boy is only 3, I thought "that is my kid", and then towards the end of the episode they reveal that the kid has Asperger's. That is when I started the research.
My kid has all the classic signs, including the above-mentioned (in paragraph uno) and hyperlexia. He is also extremely preoccupied with video games- to the point that we thought it was unhealthy (but never had a clue in the world that it could be classified under something such as Asperger's). He tested at 24 months for social interaction (and he was 44 months at the time of evaluation!) and at about 30 months for attention span. I took him to his pediatrician yesterday (who was waiting on the evaluation results because we all knew something was up, but thought it revolved more around speech problems and adhd) and told her that I had a feeling it was Asperger's, and she said, "That is exactly what I was thinking." So, she is doing the research for me to help us find a qualified psychologist to fully test my preschooler. She said it's very hard to get a diagnosis at his age, but there is no doubt in my mind.
Anyhow, back to me. From this page and forum, I was hoping to figure out more about my son and if we were right on with our thoughts that it may be Asperger's, but the more I read the more I felt like I belonged here...so I started taking some of the scientific tests, and I took the "Aspie Quiz". All signs point to "Yes", as the Magic 8 ball would say!
Looks likes this is where I belong. And I get the extra benefit of helping my child while helping myself.
Basically, what I'm trying to say is...well, "Hi!"
Best,
Carri
