Me!

Hi, I am a 33 y/o female, more or less single and I have an 8 y/o son. I live on the east coast of the U.S.

My life was a mystery to me and I have been through quite a bit of depression and despair in my younger days, until I discovered AS about 6 years ago while listening to an interview on NPR. I forget who the interviewee was but everything he said was me, and then it all came together. Since then, I have been reading everything I can find about AS. What i previously thought was PTSD, OCD, and depression (as well as my other various oddities) are all part of having Asperger's.

I have come to terms with having Asperger's mostly because my dad has it too, and he is the person I most look up to. He is the smartest person I know, and has the same no-nonsense attitude about most things as I do. I am very proud of him, and proud to be like him even if it means we are both a bit weird and people think we are strange. Communication and socialization are overrated anyway.

I feel like I already know you all...

umm I read a lot. I used to read and memorize reference books, dictionaries, encyclopedias, maps etc. when i was younger, now I read mostly classics, eastern philosophy and autobiographies. Also I like books about food and nutrition. I dunno, I think I would read just about anything if you handed it to me.

I enjoy grammar. I was on the newspaper in school from elementary school until college, editing being my favorite position. I really love correcting things!

I like being out in nature. I love listening to the wonderful sounds of the outdoors and noticing all the small details.

I will have to think of some more things... I know I'm forgetting a lot.

Having a wide range of reading interests is a major plus and something you should be proud of! :) In itself it absolutely has nothing to do with autism! If you can turn your proof-reading skills into a job of some kind then you're doing great! :D

Welcome to the WP. I am new here too. I was thinking that I had all of those other conditions too- OCD, PTSD, manic depression/ bipolar, agoraphobia. I thought , "How the hell can one person have all these?". Now it makes sense, and only have to remember one acronym.

I love grammar and editing too, although it doesn't always show because I make so many typos it is a sin. When I work on my laptop the sensor on my touch pad drives me crazy and interrupts flow because my cursor flies off to Neverland sometimes!

Welcome to WP! Your interests sound fantastic! I'm similar in some ways. I like grammar yet I don't enjoy correcting things. I only do it if I have to. And I make lots of typos, too - my mind is moving quicker than my fingers! Hope you enjoy it here!!

Hiya, Sunshine_Daydream- I am brand new too (newer than you probably, hehe), but I just wanted to say something about the dad comment you made. I had my father drive us to the pediatrician yesterday so we could share my son's evaluation with her and our suspicions that he has Asperger's, and as I was explaining this to my dad, I realized that every symptom I was explaining to him applied to my father and myself! How weird that experience was! My dad, me and my son are all very much alike- and to figure out that it is possibly the Asperger's that makes us all alike was a very neat thing. It made me feel proud too!

And Pumibel- I had very similar thoughts. I thought I was bipolar, then borderline, an anxiety disorder, then ADHD, depression and everything under the sun until I figured out that all of these things I thought were wrong with me were really all symptoms of Asperger's!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome :)

Isn't it funny how knowing other people with AS (especially family) makes it easier to deal with? I see it not so much as a disorder, as just an alternate way of being.
