Hi All - I went to post a video in the "video thread" but it said I couldn't as a new user so I'm here racking up some posts in order to get video privileges since I'd prefer to introduce myself behind a drum set instead of a keyboard, but hey, I guess there are rules everywhere...

I'm 43, diagnosed this year as PDD-NOS/Aspergers (which seems weird, but I think my Dr. struggles with DSM-V so has to do it this way) as well as some other things and after a lifetime of feeling like an odd human being who doesn't share much in common with the people he meets I thought I'd come here and see what it's all about.

The diagnosis didn't really hit home or mean anything until my first therapy session where I was approached as a broken and wounded soul which was oddly more comfortable than I would have guessed. I have a few talents in life and that's always made everyone look at me as gifted and blessed so when I would have trouble fitting in it was through blunt force that all tried to tell me to grow up, suck it up, you're childish, etc... I don't think I've felt or experienced true sympathy from another person in decades, if ever, so that was quite the mind-opening experience.

It's an interesting and strange journey this life thing. Rapidly climbed the ladder in three completely different industries only to leave each of them in spectacular fashion providing much entertainment to my coworkers. Now I'm getting the opportunity to completely focus on my obsession and feeling relatively positive about things moving forward. I've created a bunch of different personal formulas in order to get by in life and it seems I'll need to deconstruct them and rebuild a more true version of myself and hopefully this will help convert what's felt like life in a cage into actual freedom... We'll see...

Hi!

I'm in the midst of changing careers for like a third time.... what careers have you cycled through and what are you doing now?

Welcome, Roboto! I, too, identify with quite a few things in your post...

Got an engineering degree then worked in IT for 6 years. Then hospitality (managed bars/restaurants in Vegas and NYC) and then bicycle manufacturing. I always kept a love of the drum set through those times so now I'm developing a curriculum to teach students and hopefully that will keep my satisfied...

Cool. a close friend of mine also teaches drums.
He finds it very rewarding, he used to play live a lot, but it lost its spark.

One other area that you could consider is session musician for studios, or transcribing.
These days there is even a virtual musician network and even virtual drummer network
where people will pay for you to play drums on their tracks.

although i am not sure what equipment you need for this, i would assume a decent drum mic set
and a half decent room to play in that is acoustically ever fairly neutral or dead.

You sound like you've had an interesting life.
I wanted to play the drums badly when I was a teenager. I never got the chance. Perhaps someday I will.
I am sure you'll find teaching drums to be rewarding!
