I was diagnosed with Asperger's a few months ago.
Yesterday, I spoke with friends I hadn't seen since last summer. When I mentioned my diagnosis, both of them said,
"Oh, yeah, totally! You mean, you didn't know?"

Anyone else have this happen?
People that know you're AS and assume you know it too.

Nice coloring on Avatar. Wish I could be instinctively bold with color and not have to pluck up courage to use it.

Sorry, what were you saying ? :D

Welcome.

No, I didn't know anyone who knew what AS was, so most still think I'm just making excuses for being odd. :?

My family, on the other hand, although they were previously unfamiliar with Asperger Syndrome, were not the least bit surprised that I might have a 'disorder'. In fact, I think my parents were relieved to know it wasn't shoddy parenting on their part that made me so useless.

:D Welcome to Wonderland! :albino:

Trust me, a lot here have had the whole, "Im X years old and I just found out." I was 28 when i found out, and it was after 25+ years of my mother mentioning my seeming autistic tendencies (AS wasnt heard of until 1995, but i was already in high school by then). What friends i had still don't know seeing as how everyone disappears after graduating high school (and im not really one for facebook since i dont know what id post/say). That aside, welcome to the right side of the wrong planet. :)

Welcome from me too. I had to wait til 40 to find out - my parents don't believe it, they think I'm just too lazy to be an extrovert. A few people I know well said "of course you are, but I didn't like to suggest it".

So how did you come to be tested for AS; you must have been having some sort of symptoms?

Doctors thought I had it when I was 3. Then a few years after I was diagnosed. My parents thought I knew but I didn't when I finnally found out I was like 9. I still don't believe I found out at 9.....

My one friend said "I always assumed you had Aspergers. I do too..."

It turns out that many of my close friends over time have been aspies, and others qualified as BAP (Broader Autism Phenotype)

I'm starting to think we should start a community where only Aspies live/

Go figure ?

Hi Gambell! Welcome to WP. When I told my sister I thought I had it she was like, "oh yeah, I could see that". My mother responded as though a light had been turned on and it was actually my husband who approached me first, saying that he thought I had it. For me it seemed a revelation, to them it seemed like, "oh, yeah, of course!" Sometimes AS seems to feel like last-to-know syndrome.

I look forward to reading your posts.
