Hi, I joined to learn more about Asperger's. My son has been diagnosed since he was 5 years old but has gotten no services until lately.

He is 7 1/2 now and such a fun and cool kid. He has alot of anxiety and that prompted me to find him more help. He now gets theraputic and social skills counseling. It's a private company but he gets the counseling in school.

The school denies that he has AS and ADHD, so we are finally getting our own private evaluations. The problem for us has been affording all of the doctor's visits, tests, evaluations etc.

But we press on. A lttle at a time.

We are hoping to apply for a Medicaid waiver for help w/services.

I was wondering if anyone else has done this.

Right now my son's interest is Mario Wii games. He is very good at them. He plays with two controllers at a time.

His difficulty right now is anxiety over a very "differnt" child at school. He wants to "make" her quit liking him so she will leave him alone. He has hit her recently to get her to quit liking him. He says now his first job is done. His second job is to stay away from her.

The incidents w/the little girl have brought on anxieties. He is very afraid that a bee or bug will "get him" and is constantly checking his clothes and bedding for bugs. If he thinks about bugs he refuses to eat.

He is also afraid to be alone, anywhere. This just cropped up recently.

Anyway, my son is a great kid and I love him just the way he is.

:D Welcome!

Please keep in mind that there are aspects of Asperger Syndrome that resemble ADHD, but there is no medication effective for AS. If you jump to the conclusion that he has AS and ADHD and medicate him for ADHD, you could be giving him a stimulant for a disorder he may not have, and that often leads to more negative behaviors than you were dealing with in the first place. Medicate with extreme caution - and remember doctors are only practicing.

I always appreciate your insight and emphasis into "practicing" vs. the god complex delusion many professionals seem to be suffering from.

Speaking for myself, falling through the cracks in the mental health system, is in its own way, comparable to sitting on death row... and DNA evidence clears you of your "guilt". That's how I felt when the Aspergers diagnoses, began coming through one child at a time. Oh, all those years I was demonized... hated without a cause.
