Hey, my name is Catherine. I'm 19 and I am currently studying English and Neuroscience in college. I plan on working in the Public Health field when I'm done with all my schooling. I am fairly certain that I am an Aspie, although I haven't gotten officially diagnosed because my parents refuse to help me get tested.

My interests include playing piano, singing, writing, reading, movie trivia, video games, hockey, and the television show "Lost".

I hope to meet some nice people here who I can relate to, and perhaps get advice from. I look forward to "meeting" you all.

That's how my mother reacted toward me and my children.
The best thing you'll ever do for yourself, is asking your regular physician for a referral to an autism specialist, because they can ascertain whether or not you're an Aspergers.
Lingering doubts/suspicions will keep you troubled. When you have a confirmation, it'll give you peace of mind. You owe that to yourself, whether or not others want it for you.

Welcome and I wish you the best experience on WP Image

AspieForty - I couldn't agree with you more. Taking that step just requires a little more courage, independence, and initiative on my part. I don't think I've ever seen my doctor without bringing my mother in with me now that I think about it. I usually just let her do all the talking haha.

heckeler06/David - I read anything and everything! In terms of more current publications, I usually read Fantasy and Science Fiction, as well as whatever you would classify Stephen King and Chuck Palahniuk as, but I've been known to enjoy YA fiction now and again. When it comes to classics I am a huge Shakespeare buff, but I also especially like Hemingway's short stories and basically anything by Oscar Wilde.
I've also been known to read Biology and Organic Chemistry textbooks for fun.
So, yeah, just about everything.

Thanks for the warm welcome you guys.

Welcome to teh Wrong Planet. If you reside in on of the United States, you might need to consider the implications of getting an official diagnosis. In many states, being diagnosed with aspergers does not qualify you for any government benefits but will disqualify you for individual health insurance.

Cyberscan - Thanks for the welcome. Also, that's interesting about the health insurance thing, I was not aware of that. On the other hand, my desire to get diagnosed lies more in the idea of possibly getting some support services at school than in receiving any public benefits. But thanks for the heads up, I don't really have any knowledge about how insurance works since I'm still on my parents' plan.

That's why I wanted to make you aware of this. Check out health insurance companies to see if they accept clients with Aspergers or any other for of autism. There are other things to take in consideration should you get a "classic" autism diagnosis too. You might want to check to see if there is another way to get support services without getting an official diagnosis.

My understanding is, a diagnosis of A.S. is definitive for "Learning Disability".
Therefore, the federal government is on your side, that they must meet your education needs (or so it is in the U.S.A.)

The schools are now bending over backwards to accomodate my children, though I.E.P (Individual Education Plans).

No offense to cyberscan who is "Straight Talking, Intelligently Conversational"

I don't deny that there are benefits such as accommodations, I.E.P.'s, etc. but like I said, there also can be a downsides as well. Health Insurance is one of these problems at least in my state.
