Hi, I am new to Wrong Planet, glad to see that there is a website for people with Austism and Asperger's to talk to others that have it.

I have a fourteen year old son with asperger's, who was dianogsed at age nine. It has been hard because the school system has let us down so much with him, they want to single him out as being different, therefore he is treated that way.

He is an amazing child, I am amazed each and everyday, with the things he comes up with. His does not seem to focus on one thing but on a multiude of things. He likes Pokeman, Transformers, and video games. I have been told that he is just memorizeing things, but I know that is not the case. He can tell you things about animals that you never knew, he also likes his legos.

I am writing a paper for a class in college on Asperger's and the sterotypes, that go with it, if anyone has any information that would help me, I would appreciate it.

Thank you again for being there.

Here's a couple of my favorites on "stereotypes," for starters.
Aspergers people have produced satirical videos (although, keeping in mind, not every "symptom" given is exactly true all of the time), i.e., the police officer asking an Aspie to look him in the eye, and the Aspie says she "can't". Aspergers _can_ look people in the eye  but tend to have a problem with facial avoidance in general, and tend to avoid eye contact. Some Aspies have even been known to make too much direct eye contact. A matter of appropriate vs. inappropriate socialization skills, that makes people around the Aspie feel uncomfortable.

Take everything with a grain of salt, but look further into it to learn for yourself if there's substance to it. For each and every "rule" there's an exception.

My second favorite is going on Google and typing : myths about aspergers empathy into the search box.
