My name is Garrett and I have been reading on WP for a month now. I have failed to register sooner because I felt bad for self-diagnosing rather than obtaining an official peg. I will keep this brief in case people are like me and struggle with keeping attention on learning about others...

I am self ID'd with having an ASD - where on the spectrum, I may never know. Here in west Colorado, autism specialists are as hard to find as bigfoot. I am 29 years old and even though I exhibited many signs of autism when I was young, I was never ID'd because I grew up poor in a small Tennessee town. I feel guilty for being here and not having an official diagnosis, but I decided that I should put that behind me because I know my past, know who I am, and have read so much about autism the past few months that I need to force myself to stop and take a breath.

I have honed many talents over the years from being an obsessive bookworm and I hope that I can be of some use instead of just a spectator. I'm also looking forward to learning more about everyone's personal struggle with autism and hoping I can learn more about myself in the process. I think autism is beautiful and a gift from God and I am grateful for finding WP...

Welcome to WP! :). I, too, joined WP without a professional Dx. I diagnosed myself several years ago and then sought a prof. dx early last year. It took me at least a dozen calls before I found someone who would consider assessing autism in an adult, and then I had to drive over two hours (one way) to the facility half a dozen times. I sought this dx as a reassurance that I wasn't simply a poser. The professional dx allowed me to be comfortable claiming AS. I hope you enjoy the WP community!

Yo, what's up? Welcome and all that. You said you live in west Colorado, where at? (Just curious, I'm from SE Wyoming so on the state scale we're technically neighbors.)

Also, I'm guessing Japan is one of your interests? Same thing here. I'm kind of an otaku but there you are.

My home is in Mesa, which is outside of Grand Junction - nice, but I long for a greener view out of my window as this is desert stricken. Japan is fascinating to me, thanks for pointing that out. It's not so much Japan geographically, it's the culture that I am drawn to. Thank you for your story bonuspoints, reading what you said is reassuring to me that I may also be able to find a professional who is versed with ASD's.

You go to anime conventions at all? If you're going to Nan Desu Kan 2010 in Denver then I'll see you there!

Although I can very easily get lost in the right anime, I am not likely to go to Nan Desu Kan. I am far more addicted to Miyazaki films than actual series'; although, I just finished watching Death Note and found it quite intriguing.

Hello idunnosmile, welcome,

Miyazaki made some nice films indeed!

Enjoy your stay on the Wrong Planet!
