A lot of information that makes me think I have undiagnosed AS!

I could share a lot of info, but I did read the "You might be an Aspie" thread and I found myself nodding to quite a bit! Not the computer or math whiz stuff, but a lot of other stuff. I grew up thinking I was shy, weird, socially inept, anxious, too smart to be with people, very black-and-white, obsessive about things short-term, having difficulty with emotions, constantly thinking, thinking, thinking, having to have things in a certain way, certain order, etc. Maybe I don't have it, but I sure feel "related" to some of the posts here!

For years, I have always thought my son could be on the spectrum, but he is fine for the most part and I have never thought about getting a diagnosis for him. We have found good ways to parent him and help him overcome certain issues, like food intolerance, clothing intolerance, changing routines, etc. And, he is the child that I say is so much like me. When you compare him to his sister, just 19 months younger, you can really see the differences. For example, we were eating out and you could see 2 TVs, each playing the same baseball game. My daughter just said, "Mom, I like watching baseball." My son said, urgently, "Mom! The words on the bottom done match each other, but it's the same game! Why don't the words say the same thing? It's the same game, see, the teams are the same and they are doing the same things ... " They were both watching the TV, but she was watching the game, and he was noticing all of the discrepancies, and not paying attention to the actual game! I could list a bunch more, but I do know that he is different, and SPECIAL, and I am looking for ways to encourage both myself and him in life.

He is 8.5, by the way. I'm 28.5. After him comes 3 girlies, ages (almost) 7, 4.5 and 2.5. We homeschool and have done so since the beginning, and I have really seen him blossom in his social skills in the last 2 years. He is also LEGO fanatic, building the most amazing things without any instructions, especially Star Wars ships. :) LEGOs would have to be his speciality.

So, that's it. Hi!

Oh and I really identify with "wrong planet!"

Well, hey! Apparently a lot of parents find that they have AS whilst researching for their child.

You do not know how much I envey your son for being homeschool. There is no telling how much of a different person I would have been if my parents kept me away from school. I would have been more trusting and kinder person.

I envy my son as well, believe me. I am saving him a lot of heartache for being "different", yet not depriving him at all of excellent academics and opportunities to socialize with people of all ages who are kind and considerate. He is doing much better than I was at his age, I think. I was full of self-loathing, wishing I was someone else at age 8. :(

Edited to say: Thank you.

Edited AGAIN to say that I didn't set out to homeschool to "protect" him from things, because at that time, I wasn't making any connections about his behavior. It has just been one of those added benefits. We wouldn't change a thing. :)

Hi there!

I've got three kids in the spectrum. The eldest two have AS and the youngest is a bit of an enigma. We all have ADHD. I've wondered about me having AS but I asked our psychiatrist who knows us all very well and took a few tests online and came out as not even close to the spectrum. If I'd been closer I might have gone for more accurate testing. I guess I'm just odd in my own way.

Welcome!

What kind of tests? I'd like to look at some for ADHD. I can see some of those traits in myself, but I disagree with others.

I did take the Aspie test linked in another subforum (with tons of pages in response) and got 149/200. :? I'm not foolish enough to believe the results of every online test, though! It was interesting, to be able to say YES to some of those questions that I really identified with. But who knows?

I do know that I am beginning to love my son's more "different" traits now, rather than wish he'd be more normal like his sister!
