I'm a little nervous about joining this community. I'm passing as neurotypical at college and nobody knows but my family.
I was diagnosed ADD at six and Asperger's at 13. I'm twenty two now.
I've always been private about my struggles because of how people judge and treat those with a label. (I'm only remotely open about the add, and then only when I have people living w/ me. It's kinda hard not to notice.) I've been through bullying, dysfunctional authority figures, too much time in the non fiction part of the library, the typical aspie childhood.
I feel alone often. Most of the time when I have opened up, I've been burned. (blame my cheating ex and many dysfunctional people) Very rarely do I feel comfortable enough to show some parts of my personality. I have no problem speaking up, quite the contrary. I just feel like I have to be on my guard when i'm in public.
However, I am one strong woman. I am "always fighting" through any problems I have and coming out ok. I have people I talk to in classes, just not much of a social life. I have plenty of friends when I work in the summer at an amusement park, because I feel like everyone's going through the same thing. Just not at school.
I would also like all 40 year old men to quit hitting on me. I may be your intellectual peer, but I am not getting with someone old enough to be my father!
Currently, I am in college studying to be a Social Worker. I want to advocate for people with disabilities and fight ableism. I plan on marrying, but I don't want children.
