Howdy. I'm new. My son has diagnosed AS (recently diagnosed and close to 8 years old). My ex husband has undiagnosed AS. I have diagnosed ADHD and now, after much research regarding my son and my ex and exploration on ASD in women, I believe I have AS as well. I can't see myself getting a diagnosis here as the cost of my son's was $1600 and mine would be the same. Sole parent and homeschooling and right now the ADHD dx does whatever I might 'need' in terms of assistance to study, etc.

I have appreciated reading the forums for the past couple of days and just wanted to say thanks for having this place. It is helping. :)

But seriously, I'm sorry you had to pay that much for a diagnosis for your son.

Yeah no *beep*. It was that or a three year waiting list in the public system while we floundered around like fish on the beach. I got about $600 back through the public health system here. I am fortunate to have wonderful friends and he's got a grandfather (also probably AS) who wanted to help as well. Can't see spending that for me as an adult, though.

Not sure what the diagnostic process is elsewhere, but here in Western Australia it's visits to a speech pathologist, clinical psych and specialist paediatrician who all have to agree before a dx is given. We get our formal dx for him tomorrow, actually. Have so far been given "definitely on the spectrum". I did it for him so that I could figure out exactly what to do to assist him in life as I've jumped around thinking it was ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety problems, etc., for about two years now trying to get some help. Hasn't been a fun time. First time I saw someone he was 18 months old and we were dismissed "because look, he's pointing when I ask him where the little toy car is".

I heard the medical system in Australia was good, better than Canada's in fact. In my desire for health care (I live in the US and am uninsured) I sometimes forget about some of the shortcomings of public systems, but its got to be better than the wealth-care we have in this country. It's good that your doing all that for him when I was young my parents just assumed I was troubled.

Oh and by the way:

I'm addicted to gum and trees. It's like we have a secret language all our own already! :P

I'm from the states originally and yes, it sucks there a lot in comparison to many other western nations on quite a few different levels. I'm a dual national now and I would always pick Australia over the USA. We have this bizarre idea that there ought to be some semblance of social equity availed to those who want to achieve things in life irrespective of the class they are born into and that everyone should be fed, clothed, doctored, paid and watered graciously. OMGREDSUNDERTHEBEDQUICKRUN.

As a child my parents always assumed I was troubled. I'm sure they still assume I'm troubled. My "troubles" are likely used to explain why I don't communicate with the majority of my family anymore. But that's a tale for another day from a different canopy.

I don't get why its so expensive just to get diagnosed, where I'am, you would just get diagnosed for FREE!

Anyways, welcome to WP. :D

Mental health services are shite here. He could get dx'd for free here but it was a three year waiting list and he's turning eight in September and was falling apart emotionally so I could see waiting. In Western Australia it's two specialist speech pathology appointments ($500), three specialist clin psych appointments ($850) and two specialist paediatrician appointments ($300 each but he felt bad for me so I got a discount on his services). My son's report is coming in the post on Monday and his clin psych said that adults don't have to go through the same process and she will discuss what I need.

The issue for me is I'm an adult and estranged from family and living overseas so I don't have family to back up 'what where you like as a child' aside from a sister and I cannot access school reports due to not wanting to bother and/or ask my sister to go through my personal things I left in her basement when I left the country. We'll see. I'm just as sure now for myself as I was for my son and I was spot on about him. The more I read here the more my surety percentile regarding myself increases. ;) It's likely I might be able to see the clin psych just once or twice and get a dx. I already have an ADHD dx so for study, etc., it doesn't mean anything useful for me in the grand scheme of things at 41. I could write that book I've been crapping on about and have more credence with a dx though. :D
