Hi
My brief story: I never had any friends throughout my high school years - I was basically an outcast the entire time. I finished high school in 2003, and went through a period of extreme depression immediately after finishing. At one point I expressed concern to my mother about my inability to socialize - I think I said something about how the ability to socialize seems to come naturally to everyone else, but for some reason it doesn't come naturally to me. Then she said something like: "I think it's time we mentioned the A word".
Anyway... I went to see a psychiatrist and he basically told me he believed I had Asperger's, and it was up to me whether or not I get an "official" diagnosis. In the end I decided not to get a diagnosis because of two disadvantages he mentioned - the first one being that insurance can be more expensive if you are diagnosed with a mental illness, and the second being that having a mental illness precludes you from getting certain jobs.
