I've been lurking on the site for a while and just plucked up the courage to start posting. I was diagnosed with Aspergers last December after suspecting for a while that I had it (before that I just thought I was weird and selfish). My doctor's have been pretty rubbish at helping me understand it as I think I come across as pretty "normal" so I was told that I've done all the Cognitive Behavioural therapy myself and that "life's just a battle - get on with it", so I thought I might be able to get more helpful info on here. And it's also cool to chat to people who'll hopefully understand where I'm coming from.

So hi everyone!

Welcome to Wrong Planet!

Aspie minds are wired differently, so it is very difficult for NTs to understand how we think. CBT is a waste of time with an Aspie--my wife tried and it didn't work. She is a very gifted therapist--the type that co-workers visit to get on the job help with issues.

Thanks for your posts!

BTDT - Yeah I don't think CBT is going to do that much for me, I've already seen any number of psychologists, counsellors, etc for depression before I was diagnosed and they onlyworked as short-term fixes. I just want to understand more about AS and talk about the things that I've always kept hidden in therapy/counselling sessions because I was sure that the other person wouldn't know what I was talking about.

Thanks again guys! I've been going through a bit of a hard time recently trying to process things as I've just been diagnosed and not had much help from my doctors but reading through the threads on these forums has really helped me start to sort through things - so many things which i thought only I experienced and was terrified to tell other people I've found out that lots of you feel too. Feels great just to be able to talk about them with other people who understand and try and do what I can to help out other people who might be feeling low too.

Hi. Im just starting venture out on here aswell. I was diagnosed in the 80's when not much was known about aspergers and not much out there to help. at the moment im rediscovering my aspergers as ive been on anti depressants for years that have dull the traits and did give me the chance to work at it on my own. Doctors just wanted to medicate me and didnt inform me of anything else out there that could help, as soon as i am able i want to start cognitive behavior therapy myself and see how that goes. its going tobe interesting in getting to know me.

Hi Ellypaws, fellow newbie! Doctors do like to through anti-depressants at us, don't they? I've been on a few different ones but stopped taking them before I was diagnosed. I found, like you, that all they did was just mask things for a while without doing anything to solve the underlying problems. So was AS widely-known about in Oz in the 80's? Here in the UK it wasn't officially recognised until 1994 but it only seems to be in the last few years that it's filtered down into the mainstream's consciousness.
