Recently I had been reading a little about AS and was alarmed with so many "that's me!!" exclamations.

I have my whole life been called a nerd but I don't seem to fit all the symptoms. ie. I have always had anxiety attacks in crowded places and loud noises make my very uncomfortable. Every person I've ever known well has accused me of 'zoning' out. It's a small problem I need to overcome as I am engaged to be married and I need to understand (as does my fiance) why I am oblivious to things around me when I am concentrating on a task.

My father was an alcoholic and my mother always used to say that my difficulty with relationships/situations and always saying the wrong things to people were a result of the alcoholism - specifically the effect on the family.

Apart from these self-diagnosis tests, is there a specialist that any of you might know of in the NYC/NJ area that I can ask my GP to refer me to? :( :(

I seem to have been able to work around most of the 'indiosyncracies' that people label me with. I would just like to know as it would help to explain an extremely difficult and lonely adolescence. You see the kids were awfully mean to me.

Thanks.

If you are looking for a diagnosis in the tri-state area (NY, NJ CT) or maybe parts of PA, go to the Cody Center for Autism in Long Island. It was worth my 4 hour drive to get there.

Here's the phone number and they can help you from there: 1-631-632-3070

First they'll send you a questionnaire. Fill it out and send it back. They call you to make an appointment after they evaluate it. Appointments are made only on Fridays and they made one with me within 3-4 weeks. They are very nice and helpful there. If you do not have AS, they said that they help you find out if you qualify under any other PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder).

Hope this helps 8)
