Hello all,
My name is Matt. I am convinced more and more that I may have Asperger's Syndrome. I seem to fit all the signs and have since my childhood. Growing up, I am not sure what my I.Q. was but I was always socially awkward, introspective, very quiet, and I had an unusual speaking-patterns. Nowadays, I seem to have flowered in terms of intelligence and I have gotten better at socializing with people but I still tend to be socially awkward. I have noticed that my behavior has always seemed eccentric. People have always labeled me "weird".
Like others with A.S. I have an intense focus on areas of peculiar interest to me and I have always had difficult times with nonverbal clues and body language. I was, like many others, bullied by some kids, always teased and picked on, and preferred my own thoughts to that of other people. I haven't been formally diagnosed with A.S. but I am more and more convinced that it's what I have. I learn differently from everyone else, solve problems differently, and tend to be fascinated and think about things that very few people seem to care about ( i.e. I find black holes extremely fascinating but most people don't give a damn about them).
I am mostly into academics. I love studying philosophy, religion, physics, economics, politics, etc. I don't have much in common with other people in terms of interest with other guys. Nothing I can do can be described as very "manly". I don't care for cars; they're mostly a means to an end. I honestly cannot stand athletics. I am socially awkward when it comes to romantic potential. I can befriend women fine and have good conversations with them but I have never been successful with romantically pursuing them. This is odd considering that I love romance, constantly find myself desiring a long-term romantic relationship, and I even have a fascination with sex.
A close friend of mine recently suggested that I may have A.S. I didn't know what it was and I started reading about it. I didn't think I did so at first because I really didn't understand it. However, I became convinced that since it was a form of autism, I have read more and more about it and suddenly, it makes near-perfect sense. I am planning on getting diagnosed to see if I have it but in the mean time, I wanted to search for others with A.S.
Matthew
