I am a possible, strongly suspected, Aspie. My husband and oldest daughter are also possible, and now my younger daughter wants to screen herself too, out of curiosity. Apparently she relates to some of the questions I told her were on the test I took.

As a child I was always "the weirdo," who didn't fit in with the others. Although my IQ is high, my schoolmates considered me "ret*d," and this is back in the days when that word actually did mean "having special needs." Even my own mother slipped up once, in frustration, and told me she sometimes thinks I really am. (She instantly apologized for saying such a cruel thing, but I noticed she didn't say it wasn't true.) That's about the story of my life.

Social skills, I have none. I have managed to get along by studying etiquette as if it's a school subject, and I've learned enough to keep people from wanting to smack me when I offend them. But the rules have to be clearly mapped out for me. I have to be told exactly, "In situation X, you say this and do that." Otherwise, I wouldn't know. I've been reviled most of my life for "being book smart but not having any real-world sense."

And, true to form, I'm really not sure what to say now, so I'll shut up.

Welcome, I am new here too!

Wow, I can relate to what you are saying. I never had any social skills and was told that I was smart but lacked "common sense." I also got made fun of for being slow. I always took too long to sort out my answers in my head before I said them. I had a teacher call me "flash" as a sarcastic nickname.

I was often called Pokey. Which didn't help me enjoy the Gumby cartoons very much, because I always associated them with being insulted.

Wow, flash and Pokey are so similar. Not very nice. Those teachers were so wrong to do that to kids who were already struggling to fit in. I vaguely remember the other kids laughing at me because of the teacher's name calling.

It is nice to share and see how similar our stories are. I am seeing so many things here on WrongPlanet that match up with what I went through. It is so helpful to feel at home with others who had to deal with the same things.
