Today I received the diagnosis from my child's psychologist that he has PDD NOS/ Asperger / Autism.

He will be 8 in June.

I found this community on Wikipedia after doing a search on the phrase Asperger. I'm very grateful that you are here. I'm at sea and at a loss, but it's great to find some people who are in the know. I want to become armed with as much information as possible so that I'm the best mom possible as my child grows into adulthood.

Thanks for listening.

The best way to learn about AS, is to read all of the posting activity that goes on here on WP. You will find that we're all unique people with unique traits from one another. You will learn that some of us don't want a cure and some of us do. You will also see us talk about our childhoods and what we wish that our parents would have done differently. You can learn a lot about ASDs by interacting with us. I hope that you'll like it here. :)

Thank you so much for the welcome and for allowing parents like me to have insight. Today I was finally given a "word" to describe what I've experienced with my child since he was just a few days old. Now everything is making more sense. I feel both relieved and a little scared. Discovering this site has been awesome for me, and I look forward to sinking into it so that I can best prepare my child for adulthood. Thank you again.

It's a long haul, but you're in the driving seat. At least until he grows up a little. Then he'll take over control.

One task is equipping your child to deal with the world. Another is equipping the world to be less intolerant of the different. They're both "invest your lifetime, no odds on success" sort of tasks, but they're yours. Much of what you do will be wrong. It doesn't matter.

Hi. Welcome. As the mother of an 11 years-old Aspie diagnosed 3 years ago, I understand what you are going through. Good thing: there is a lot of information about Asperger's out there. There are a lot of wonderful sites over the Internet, and books you can read. You just need to do a little research. I can recommend you to get a good therapist for your kid. Not a psychiatrist or psychologist. A therapist can do wonders in help your child cope, and helping you understand and help your child become a productive person. My daughter's therapist is wonderful. She always gives us strategies on how to work with her at home, and is with us every step of the way, every time we need her. It is wonderful. Just a couple of years ago our child could hardly function inside the classroom, and today she is one of the best students at her class. She works, she takes notes, she has friends, she enjoys school (she used to be afraid of going to school every morning). I hope you can find the help you need. My best wishes.
