Hello, I'm recently diagnosed with aspergers syndrome and thought it would be cool to know more/ befriend more people with aspergers

This question is of great interest to me. I am not Aspergian myself. I am here because I have a family member with aspergers and needed better insight. This site has been very helpful in that.

I have wondered for decades how the process of telling people in close community about conditions such as aspergers would best be done (or not done).

The misunderstandings between asbergians and NTs are heartbreaking. Having learned just a bit about the challenges and differences between the two, I believe that even a little knowledge is quite useful in my relationships with asbergians. I'm starting to "get it".

I suspect that knowing a person has AS would instantly help me to have better interactions with them. But I don't know what to advise you. I wish dialog on this comes to pass.

I have told a couple of friends about it and the majority just don't get it, or they ask me what's asparagus (as in the vegetable) this make me laugh
Neurotypicals see people with AS as different and from experience, I know that people just think I'm weird or a freak... In primary school, I was bullied and bashed, for being a freak...
I'm so happy I know why I'm different now and I believe I still am the same as everyone else, everyone is different in some way, no two people are the same.
If you want further help understanding aspergers and trying to 'get it' I do suggest you watch movies/documentaries about aspergers, they usually show you what it is like and the main character has aspergers. Books and websites are also great but I'm sure you have already read upon and researched a multitude of them.

There's just one or two people who don't know about my AS, but all the other people who do know are in some way related to it, so I don't know how to approach it either,
