Hello, I have just joined as I am interested in getting to know other people with Asperger's, My name is James I saw a program on UK TV last year about a guy who had been diagnosed with Asperger's later in life.

I thought that I regonised similarities between this gentleman and myself so I visited the TV shows website and did a online test which I scored very highly on it was a Autism-Spectrum Quotient for autistic traits in adults.

I mentioned this to my GP and they were very helpful in applying for funding for me to go and see a specialist in a different NHS region which had taken about 8 months from start to finish I just went for my last assesment yesterday and was confirmed as having Asperger's the doctor said I have adapted a lot of skills and abilities to cope with social situations I find awkward and is arranging for me to see a few other people regarding help and advice.

I would just like to sort of get to meet people who also have Aspergers as so far I am experiencing awkward feelings as I feel relieved that now I know the reasons behind some of the thing that I do and feel, but also confusion about what Aspergers means to others and how it effects them with depression and things as there seems to be a lot of differences between each person

Hi Keimeren,
I can understand very well what you said. I have been diagnosed just recently, some months ago.
Diagnosis has been a great relief for me, and I start to read a lot about Aspergers and I have found very helpful to read experience of other people with the same condition and recognize some part of me in some descriptions. It brings more light and understanding.
It is a long process I guess. I still feel a bit lost also myself.

I am finding a lot of similarities between myself and other people but I tend to get frustrated when I dont recieve information fast enough.

I think ideally I would like to be able to have a few Apsies nearer to where I live to be able to relate to and talk directly with, but I am waiting for more information to come back and a few phone calls regarding autism group that also provide things for aspies in my area.

I mean I am aware of the benifits of dealing with and interacting with people online as it takes away the neccesity to use and experience body language which in a way for people like us is a godsend but this forum is sort of like being reborn into a family you never knew you had, that you can relate to in so many ways but still dont alway know how to approach certain subjects.

I have a overwelming urge to just vent off and spill my guts out about all things I think and struggle with and also symptoms I have had and medications I have been put on and been taking for the last 14 years. but thats like a hollow victory I guess I think its to do with having this weight lifted from my shoulders knowing that yes there is an issue I have, which has a name now, but now that the weight has been lifted there is a sort of space inside me that missing as I have fought to keep everything in and everything going day to day, no I am lost and empty.

and....... ((sigh)) cookies just don't fill that gap.

Very eloquently stated..."being reborn into a family you never knew you had.." I can second that. It's been only a few months since I had the label placed on me..and yes it's a weight off the shoulders however there is that void inside too. I also feel as though I want to spill my guts in one shot. But I know it probably wouldn't be understood that way. And I've come to realize, there is quite a range of traits..not all Aspies are created equal :)

Welcome to WP..

And not a hint of tumbleweed in these parts!

Thankyou for you appreciation and warm welcome, yes we are all different but also very similar I can cope in certain situations that others can't and I fall down really badley almost a total lock down when it comes to realtionships and friendships, but I am also getting alarmed by how little support there is in the UK I have been very fortunate being diagnosed as a adult as here in the UK its sort of a postcode lottery as to if you can get access or any type of information

Keimeren could you explain a bit more what do you mean?
I live in the UK too, even if I am italian
but I am here because of my studies in Univeristy.
I have been diagnosed as Asperger's some months ago, and now I am 33
actually I think the UK is a great place for Aspies.
At least it seems to be acknowledged as a specefific condition more than some other countries.
Also I agree, every of us is unique and special, even if we can find some common traits because of Asperger's.
