Hi. I'm new here.
I'm not new to the idea of message boards so I should fit in here (hopefully)
I am a student at the University of Otago (New Zealand) studying Computer Science.

I was diagnoised with Asperger's Syndrome in 2001 a few years back. I didn't react well to getting this diagnosis at all. My initial reaction was along the lines of "if i'm really gonna be like this i'm gonna kill myself."

But since i'm not a quitter this lead to an experiment.
I was going to be normal.
I was going to try really hard to be NT.
And thus I watched the others at my school how the normal people got along and so the first version of my NT emulation was developed.

But this experiment went too far.
For a while I fooled myself into thinking I was normal.
But now nearly three years later
I've realised I can't go on like this.

Those who do computer science will know an emulator is not the thing it's trying to emulate and Artificial Inteligence will never be true Inteligence.

My social interaction is exactly the same. It may fool some people and in the situations it was developed and tested in or similar situations, it works fine I can get my thoughts across and not be anoying to others around me, I can make friends, I can form relationships (well maybe), but give it something completely new and different and i'll run off and hide and won't say a word.

I'm so tired I can't hold up an NT like front for more than 10 minutes right now.

I've been thinking I do need to accept that I have AS and stop running away.

This is not unlike when I found out I was Bisexual, I was like no i'm not and tried to run away from myself.... tried to make myself like guys and guys only.

Now i'm doing exactly the same thing all over again in a different way.

I need to find a way to live that's not so draining on me. Something that isn't going against the grain of who and what I am.

I thought hopefully this site would be supportive.
I like the name.
I do think maybe i am on the wrong planet.
Maybe this is an away mission.
But unlike star trek I don't have the benifit of detailed information about the native society and culture.

Hello there, that's very interesting.
For me it is very difficult to do something useful around other NT's because all of my processing power goes to emulating normal people when communicating.

I remember when my cousin came to visit... wow such an neurotypical person, she had to turn on TV, and modify her face and vocal output to every $%&# she saw on MTV. Then I had to pretend to be interested in having talk about what happened to all people me and her both knew. So fun :P

I know C and JAVA well. I did learn pascal once, but I haven't programmed in it for long enough to forget it all. I played around with Standard ML (functional programming) for a little bit.

Now i'm trying to get back into playing my gutair again.

Thats interesting to hear. I am currently taking AP Computer science which teaches Java. I am using a robot called karel who i'm supposed to move around. Hopefully we will start actually coding some apps soon since thats what I like doing.

I think this might have been brought up before, but there seems to be a very high incidence of homosexual/bisexual people within the autistic community. I think someone suggested that maybe its because AS people are less judgemental, or perhaps less restricted by society.
I don't really know, but it is interesting to note nonetheless.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. I wouldn't have thought there'd be any more bi/gay aspies around than among any other group of people.

Maybe I will find someone. Most of the people I get on with have some degree of AS themselves.

As a straight guy, I'm curious. How does one find out one is gay/bi? :?:

Not to derail the thread but I have a Linux question. Ever since my old internal hard drive went kaput, I've been running my old PII 400MHz machine off of various Live CDs, settling upon alternating between XFLD and Xubuntu as they seem to be the most efficient and compatible with my hardware, though with certain limitations in each that I compensate for with the other. I notice the Gentoo Live CD only has a release for i686 machines and I'm curious if you happen to know of any other distributions that might be more lightweight yet with a wider hardware compatibility (without getting into lengthy command lines.)

Thanks.

Hi!!

I'm sure you will like this place, its very nice and everyone is pretty friendly(or has been so far).
I'm a lesbian but i can't say that i've noticed a very large amount of bi/gay people on this site. The normal stats (as far as i know) are about 10% of the population, while hte incidences of Bisexual-ness, especially amongst woman, are i suspect much higher!! !!
I wonder how many gay/bi's there are here??
