Hi Folks!
I'm new here and thought it a good idea to present myself :D
I'm 33, from Germany and a recently self-diagnosed AS.
I'm currently in the final stages of my PhD (or rather German doctorate) in Linguistics.

Until yesterday I was in a relationship but we officially broke up finally after having had problems for quite some time. The relationship lasted about 5 years. I guess my AS diagnosis, which my GF definitely agreed with once she read about the syndrome, was the final straw because there isn't much hope anytime soon for me to "just get my act together and behave properly".
We parted relatively amicably though so we can keep living together at least until I get through writing my thesis because moving out now would be a pain.

Well, hi there again I guess :-)

Welcome, shiny new member! WrongPlanet is a great web site to share, joke, commiserate, complain, and learn more about Asperger's and related conditions, but of course you know that already since you've joined.

When I was in my late thirties a counselor suggested I might have Asperger's syndrome. I did some research and self-diagnosed immediately (it has since been confirmed by two official diagnoses the past ten years). I was delighted that the problems I had were not a curse unique to me, although in other ways it is depressing that others suffer some of the same symptoms. My girlfriend of the time though was crushed because she realized some of our relationship problems were due to my neurology, not due to something like past conditioning that could conceivably be overcome. That was one of the factors in our eventually splitting up.
