Call me Kosmo.

I'm 34 years old, and have recently realized that i have AS / HFA.
Well i think i've subconsciously known for sometime, but it is only now that i can accept that this is my nature; and it feels like a relief.

About 5 or 6 years ago, i was (mis-)diagnosed with depression, and was proscribed Prozac - which was a great help.
Over the past year i have become withdrawn and depressed again ( now getting better.)
This time around i did not want to go back on Prozac; I developed an interest in NLP & hypnosis ( one of my latest 'obsessions').
Anyway, I have always seen myself as a 'loner', and maybe a misanthropist; so i figured, that if i could change these belief systems, then i would be in for a happier time.
( NLP & hypnosis are great for changing.)
But the flaw is that these are not 'belief systems' but symptoms, which has led me to here.

Reading the 'triad of impairments' it seems pretty clear.
I don't need an official diagnosis, i mean who needs labelling?
But it is good to accept myself, so that i can move forwards, instead of wasting more time raking up more demons from my past.

Was that too heavy for an intro?

All for now.. Kosmo

Welcome Kosmo

I need a label, just to replace the labels I have been given in the past(depression, social phobic, possible BPD,weirdo,freak,alian...)I am in process of getting DX,in part, because I want to make sure I am not "deluding" myself(I have been known to do this)Either way,I know I do have alot of traits and relate well to many people here. This site has been a very positive experience for me.It has put a new twist on much of my past which I have never been able to understand(nor have the counslers who have tried to "fix" me.)I know now that AS cant be "cured"and their are things I have fought against changing because then I wouldt be "me" anymore.I just want to make some adjustments in my life,so that it is less stressful.I think that is easier to do when the foundation of the issue is a correct one(which I think AS is for me)I have been opperating on what I believe was the false assumption of past counselors...all my problems are because I am adopted or CD.I never felt that explained "every issue" and fixing the "depression" or CD has not taken away the other issues.

Anyway....welcome,I am glad you feel you have found some answers,I think asking the right question is the first step.

Welcome aboard, Kosmo.

Not too heavy an intro at all (you should see mine; a mini-autobiography and rant). I figure this is a place where we can say things about ourselves that we can't anywhere else, with a chance of being understood and accepted.

I agree about the label and not feeling a need for a "professional opinion." I think we know ourselves better than any NT shrink ever will, and if the shoe feels comfortable and helps, then wear it.

I understand about the pressure to change and the relief in finding that you're actually not weird or "broken" at all. That's one of the problems I have with the "professionals." They define themselves as "normal" and then anyone who they can't understand or who differs from them is somehow dysfunctional, subnormal, "impaired," etc., and needs to be "fixed" to be like them. No, thanks. Like I think krex is saying, I've gotten to the point where I just want to find ways to be me in a world that isn't really mine.

Anyway, I'm glad you've found some answers that help you. At 58, I'm still doing the same thing. I hope I never stop.

Hey Cosmo

Welcome to the planet. I went through a similar process. Not identical, but similar. Diagnosed with depression, hey, for some of us, depression is recognizing reality. Prozac turned me into a zombie, but welbutrin worked pretty well for me. What I found, though, was that not being depressed had absolutely no influence on how I got along with other people. It just relieved the symptoms, like painkillers for appendicitus.

Misanthropic? I'd win a gold medal if it was an olympic event. Another logical conclusion. If every rabbit I saw reacted to me with extreme hostility, I'd probably hate rabbits. But I'm not a rabbit. I'm trying to figure out how to live in a world of humans. Maybe I'll manage. Maybe some of your thoughts will help.

Welcome to Wrong Planet Kosmo

It was a good intro and I agree with you about labelling.

May I ask, has NLP/hypnosis helped in any way?

Thanks for the welcomes.

CanyonWind: I like the rabbit analogy.. it reminds me.. the only rabbit i ever knew made me sneeze.
If i was in the same room, i would be in a constant sneezing fit.
It could be out of sight, hiding behind furniture but if i started sneezing, then you could be sure, it was lurking somewhere. My parents got rid of it. I don't think any less of rabbits, i'd be prepared to give a different one a chance. Just not really inclined to do so.

Has NLP/hypnosis helped?
If nothing else, it has certainly made me more self-aware. ( And aware of other people's differences.)
For me, it was kind of like the pill in 'The Matrix'.
Sometimes i wish i took it years ago, other times i think that living on Prozac and not caring would have been better.

In any case, some of Richard Bandler's hypnosis videos i find absolutely hilarious.
There are a few 'normal' people out there that are really screwed up too, you know
