Hello all,
I have been suspecting that I have Asperger's for a few months now. I have been researching online, reading articles and so on. The other day I came across an article that basically summed up who I am and I could definitely identify with the personality traits. It was quite bizarre how I could understand my behaviour better after reading it. My whole life I have hoped that things would get better if I detected what I am doing wrong and changed myself but following my realization or high suspicion that I have Asperger Syndrome, I am finding myself losing hope, not in a dramatic way, it seems to be just a fact that I will always have issues to deal with or difficulties, I don't know what to call them.
What I found most interesting in that article, which I guess I can not attach as haven't posted 5 times yet, is the mention of Asperger's in families. In my family we have this term we use jokingly which is "he is one of them" and it refers to relatives who have odd social skills or who say things that nobody else would say. There are many people in my family including myself who have been labelled as "one of them" or as "sui generis". I don't think my relatives knew what Asperger's is and as I was growing up they just thought my behaviour to be just normal because I was "one of them" and "it runs in the family" in the form of eccentric behaviour.
Some noises would make me jump, but my mom thought it was hilarious, I would talk a lot and always ask why this and why that, and they would just tell me to stop or leave the room, one day apparently my grandmother duct taped my mouth so she could take a nap. My point is that they didn't realize that I was different and that I could use some help. I have some forms of synesthesia, a high IQ, tinnitus and anxiety, I am a very light sleeper and I don't know what else to say for now. I am female, 40, living in the USA, originally from England.
So anyway, I thought of joining here in order to connect with other people who are like minded and to better understand myself through interacting with them. Plus, I think it will be fun and here I can just be myself and I don't have to worry about what people will think of me.
PS The article is called Straight talk about Asperger Syndrome by Paul Coojimans

I also found out who I am from the internet. I then found some great (and not so great) support from professionals.
Being you is exactly the right attitude. The one thing you willl find with Aspergers is the same that you will find with any condition and NT people. We are all different. I can read people's facual expressions and know when someone is bored or sad/happy. I am probably weaker than some in other aspects of the condition. For me, the best thing so far was finding my comfort, the thing that makes me chilled when i feel my body/mind racing and anxiety kicking in.
Welcome to WP, if ever you need to talk about anything, PM me.

Hi, I can read people's expressions too but I am not sure that I am reading them right all of the time. I get most confused when their expressions are in relation to me. Some expressions are clearer than others. Then I have learnt to notice everything, twitches, tapping of fingers or feet, blinking, and I combine all and I can "read" them, or maybe I just think I can read them and I totally misunderstood. lol Who knows! The reason why I started learning to notice everything, and I started as a child, is because I thought that facial expressions are not enough, because people might be hiding something, but upon examining the combination of body language and words and facial expressions, I will understand what they are really saying. What does NT mean? So you have found a way to stop that body/mind racing anxiety? I haven't yet! lol
Thanx for you reply!! !

NT = Neuro Typical (please forgive my spelling sometimes) :) basically an NT is the average person, without an autistic spectrum disorder. As I said though, trying to define an average person is almost impossible. My boss for instance would is classed as an NT but arranges things in order like someone with OCD would do. My girlfriend is classed as an NT although she has lots of little quirks and traits of various conditions.

do you by any chance know if there is a way, same as happens on other forums,to find something like "all threads that Suspie has posted in" and be able to click on it and find the threads? I have posted in a few threads and now I am finding it hard to find them again! thanx :D

Hello Suspie.

Suspie = Suspected Aspie ?

Welcome. Hope you will enjoy your stay.

In my family, it's quite the same thing. We notice that we are different but don't really understand. Now I think I understand. Most of us have autistic traits, both on my father side and on my mother side.

I was called a Cockney Rebel at a place that I worked a long time ago.
