Hi all. Not very good at introductions but thats my best efforts at a hello.

I am nervous about going to see my GP about a diagnosis as I am paranoid I wont be believed or fit whatever categories determine things. I am a 29 year old female and my brother was diagnosed with asperger syndrome at 16 years old and I think I have been overlooked in diagnosis.

Is there anyone else in this situation where a sibling was diagnosed as ASD and you were missed due to not being as 'severe' or 'obvious' in displaying tendencies.

I would like some general advice please as I don't have any friends ( preferred ) but am in a long term relationship with an understanding partner. due to this I do not have access to many people who may have been in my circumstance.

Thanks

Tori

Hi Tori, welcome to wrongplanet.

I am female and was diagnosed at age 29 too. It has been a couple of years now and people that have always known me do not believe my diagnosis.

None of my siblings were ever diagnosed and neither was my father but life might have been much less stressful growing up if my family had educated themselves about some of the weird tendencies we all seem to share.

In the end, I am very happy that i was finally diagnosed. It explains so many things I have experienced throughout my life that I can't believe no one noticed much earlier.

I wouldn't worry about 'severity', it is a spectrum after all. When I got my Aperger's diagnosis, my docotor said I was mild but still very much on it. The best thing you can do, is just sit with your doctor and tell them why you believe you have Asperger's, they'll be busy making notes on their computer, so just relax and be as 'real' as you can without feeling anxious and if you do feel anxious, tell them. I walked out of my doctors surgery with a referral and it felt like a weight had been taken from my shoulders. Good luck with it. Stick around here, it's a great little community and everyone seems lovely so far.

Thankyou for your honesty. I have terrible difficulty expressing myself and am bad without routine....very bad indeed. I do not seem to think the same way as other people do and simply put feel I fit the bill so to speak.

I can instantly think of a thousand examples to present, yet I cannot put them into words.

Luckily for me my partner is very loving, very supportive and understands the structure I need each day.

What made you finally get diagnosed...was there one particular thing that happend to instigate it?

thanks ZX ... much appreciated. Iv'e always been told im 'the normal one out of my brother and I and should know better' by my parents in different situations so if I had stopped sooner to consider I could have been ASD I am sure I would have done so. I will stick around. It feels like a great place.

:) x

Hi Tori! Welcome to Wrong Planet! You are among friends here! Check out the forums. They are interesting and helpful.

No two Autism/Asperger's cases are exactly alike. Each one must be taken on it's own merits. There are a number of symptoms common to the spectrum. It is not necessary to have all the symptoms to have the disorder.

Don't stress about the upcoming doctor visit. Also, if your GP doesn't have much expertise with spectrum problems he/she may not be familiar enough with the condition to recognize the disorder in you. That doesn't mean you don't have it. If you want a formal diagnosis you should see someone who specializes in spectrum disorders.

Just be aware once you have the diagnosis, that there is no cure for spectrum disorders. However, there are treatments and coping mechanisms that can help us deal with the problems we on the spectrum face in living in an NT world. A specialist in spectrum disorders can help with info about that. So can the forums here on WP. Do some research, and again, welcome to WP.

What made me get diagnosed? Great question. I had already entered therapy to deal with post tramatic stress disorder that resulted from a very abusive upbringing.

During therapy, we discussed my ways of coping with the abuse and the differences between how I dealt with it and how my three siblings dealt with it. It was during my description of some of the worst horrors I have experienced that the doctor stopped me and said "wait, you never once believed that your parents hurt you because you deserved it?"

When I responded with "absolutely not. I followed all of their rules and never ever did anything that had resulted in abuse more than once," he said "have you heard of Asperger's?"

That is how it happened for me. :)

Once you get diagnosed, you can go and say "Screw the NT's" and go and join some AS Supremacy Group.
