new member says hello

hello. i am a 42 y/o mom of a 5 y/o just diagnosed ASD/ Asperger's. well, his first diagnosis was ADHD w/ impulsivity and "autistic traits." i think he has both Asperger's and ADHD. he has sort-of grown into Asperger's now. anyway, i/ we experience a lot of judgment and isolation in our community, so its nice to have this type of on-line community. i constantly get the stink-eye for having a kid who must appear to be a real brat who is having a temper tantrum. or he blurts out something unkind or hits another kid...etc. it's made worse by the fact that he is very tall and muscular so he appears to be 7 or 8. i continue to take him out in public, however, and we try to have fun. the playground at the park is just as much his as it is all the NT kids'. i refuse to allow them to make us physically isolate ourselves. usually i get angry at all the judgmental mommies and daddies, but i try to tell myself they are just ignorant. i have seen the statistic that 1 in 100 have ASD, but where are these other kids? mine seems to be the only one out and about.
